My son played in a tournament this past weekend where a rising 12 year old threw 110 pitches. He is a big, strong kid and beat us 5-2, but in my opinion 110 pitches is WAY too many. If you add his approx 33 warm ups that is 143. Just wanted to hear the thoughts of the board. |

I agree, that is way too many pitches for any age kid. Was this all done in one game or over a weekend? and btw, were the scorekeeper because how would one know the pitch count? |

It is rare for a major league pitcher to throw 110 pitches in a game and they do not have undeveloped growth plates and get 4-5 days rest between starts. So yes, I would be very concerned if I were a parent on this team.
I am amazed at how many coaches allow kids to pitch 4, 5 or 6 innings in a game in September and more troubling, to throw 70+ pitches in a game. What does this say about your coaching philosophy? Shouldn't you be developing all players on your team, especially in the fall? I am proud to say that we have played 6 games so far and every kid on our team has pitched at least one inning and no one player has pitched more than 4 innings in 6 games. We are focused on developing depth and preparing all of our players for the next level, not winning a fall tournament at all cost!

My son is a big strong 12u. He DOES NOT throw 110 pitches in a weekend. (Never mind in a game.) I do allow him to go longer then a lot of his friends because of his size and strength. My personal limit for him is 80 pitches. This fall, I doubt he has thrown more then 50. If we were on a team that wanted to throw him that much, we would be looking for a new team.
- Just to be clear: We did not play this weekend, so my son is not the kid in question.

I am no doctor but I my expert diagnosis is: he is a 12u all american, and if it continues will have a dead arm by the time he is 16. I was at this game and everyone was astonished that they left him in that long. It was a pool game anyways. |

From some of the things I have read, the stronger kids are actually more susceptible to injury. Their muscles get stronger than the tendons can handle. No doctors report to verify, but makes good common sense to me.
110 is too many. Most people have told me 75- 85. and also think I have read that they should take 3 to 4 consecutive months with no throwing?? Mine won't put a ball down for 3 or 4 days but we do try to take it easy when not in season. |

Folks, I know the parties involved here and there was no intent on winning at all costs. This particular pitcher was actually in a zone and was cruising along on this fine day and the coaches lost track of the number. For something that happened 1 time, there sure are a lot of comments on this. 25-30 pitches more then most people's limit is what we are talking about and it ended in a 1-0 shut out so hats off to the kid.
As far as development, that comes in practice but games should be played to win. Now, how you attempt to do that is up for debate. |

My son was on the team playing against this kid. As a pitcher, this kid is a total stud and was fun to watch even though we were on the wrong side of this one. Also as troubling as the pitch count was the fact that with a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth that they left him in there. He made relative short work of the order allowing only one walk so my guess is he was around 95 pitches before the last inning. Guess they did not have any other pitchers that can protect such an important 4run lead in a Sunday only fall ball tourney pool play game. Parents of the kid...please wake up! quote: Originally posted by JMO
