One of our top pitchers for the past couple of years has also been our #2 catcher. He's not my son, but as an assistant coach, I've been pretty insistent that he choose one or the other. The kid wants to pitch, and he's better at pitching anyway.

I have a couple of older boys too, and I've seen way too many arm injuries at this age that linger into high school. There's just so much physical growth at this age, that injuries seem to start happening a lot more.

Am I being too sensitive/protective of the player? I think players should choose one or the other.

Just an opinion, but arm injuries tend to happen for a variety of reasons...I've got pitchers who can go 5 or 6 innings with no problem at anytime. I've got some that 3-4 is about the max. The key is find out what the make up of the kids arm is, stretch properly, throw a little everyday in between starts, and monitor his arms reaction/endurance. As far as catching, I've heard different opinions. It's 2 totally different arm angles/stress points. I would definately not pitch and then catch the same day. Catching and then pitching is ok as long as the arm feels ok. Again, just an opinion

One of my sons pitches and catches, but he prefers catching. His mechanics are good and he throws long toss with his brother(also a pitcher) every day. Cutoffman is right, you just have to keep a close watch on everything. We had to tell him to ask to be taken out(pitching) if he feels tired at all.

My son is C/SS. He has been asked to pitch a couple of outs now and again. He's been lucky to keep them swinging so pitch count has always been low. If that wasn't the case, I think he'd ask that he not pitch, or I would strongly recommend it! Catching is his passion and he would not want to jeopardize his ability to start or catch entire games/multiple games.
Can a coach give up a catcher twice? 1st to be a pitcher then the second time where he shouldn't or can't throw down? Wow, run at will boys.
