Any team planning to attend Cooperstown's All-Star Village should be aware of the park's unfair parctice of prohibiting teams from using guest umpires once full payment has been received by ASV. All teams are allowed to either bring an umpire or they have to pay a $750 fee for not doing so. Last week ASV denied attempts by at least three teams trying to secure an umpire prior to or just after registering at the park. There is nothing in writting prohibiting teams from bringing in an umpire at the last minute. However, ASV came up with several lame excuses about why teams were not allowed to sign on a willing and ASV approved umpire. The real and only reason ASV is blocking teams from signing on an umpire on site is that they don't want to refund the $750 fee they had already collected from the team. Most umpires charge far less than that, which means ASV is essentially ripping off each and every team that was unable to secure an umpire prior to arriving at ASV. ASV is wrong for doing this and the practice should be stopped immediately. If you want to discuss this further, you can contact me at 508 498-1940.
I don't have a horse in this race. But what happens to the umpire that ASV had lined up for that week? If a team pays for an umpire, and ASV arranges one, doesn't someone have an obligation to that ump?
I guess my question would be very similar. Are umpires that were aquired and made plans just supposed to change them because a team brought one in at registration? I think if that were their practice nobody would want to call there. maybe I am missing your point.
