I just returned to Marietta from Pigeon Forge, Tenn. It's a great resort town with lots of excitment as long as youth baseball isn't on your to-do list. For reasons I'm still not sure of our 10uMaj travel team elected to ends its 2011 season at the "Smoky Mountain Summer Classic". Our first pool game was held at the local HS softball field accross from the main park complex. There was an $8.00 gate fee (they even tried to charge for a 3 month old). Two day 'discount' was $15.00 (more about that later). The field was OK, but no scoreboard. Our next pool game later that day was in the main park, but still no scoreboard. The fields had not been raked or lined since the first game so the batter's box was anybody's guess. (We won both; #3 seed) On Sunday, a thunder shower started during the top of the second inning of the first bracket game. It was a serious downpour but only lasted about 15 minutes. The fields grew puddles as the drainage was poor but without much ado - "Tournament Cancelled!!" (Of course no refund if you paid for the 2-day pass). Before we reached the Georgia state line one of our team parents that stayed behind texted a photo of the beautiful, sun-drenched fields!! It was a sad and unfortunate ending to a wonderful season, but I'm sure it could have been worse (Yankees?). My son and I both had a ball this spring; we're just not sure what to do with our Tuesday and Thursday evenings and weekends for the rest of the summer. Anybody need a player? |
