By looking at the teams I would say the stronger teams are definitely in Division 1.....I like how some of the AA/AAA teams have stepped up to play in Division 1, it will help their boys later in the season. Looks like it is gonna be a great tourney so far

It's simply a matter of choice and what type of competition you want to play. Div 2 is mostly AA teams with a few lower level AAA teams.

I'm picking 2,3,4,7,16,19,20 & 22 to make it to the gold bracket. Other potential's (depending on their pool) 8,11,13,17 & 25.

This should be a great tournament.

How do they determine the pool matchups?

moccs,

Not sure but they typically try to split up the major teams and higher level AAA teams into different pools. My guess is that there is alot of behind the scenes stuff that goes on. Maybe someone like Mr. Insider has some "inside" information?

Last year we played one good team and one weak team during pool play if I remember correctly.?.?.? I think it is up to the coaches to choose what division and then pool selections are supposed to be random. But sometimes the same team gets a cake draw or a really tough one every week, so I'm not sure how random it truly is...

S4, You could be right but most of the tournaments with alot teams ALWAYS have the East Cobb teams in different pools. Can't be the luck of the draw even though there are alot of 11U teams out of East Cobb (some really good some average). Not sure if this is just East Cobb bias or not (wouldn't surprise me). I think this could really hurt a deserving team that belongs in gold in a tourney like this when they are going to split up the brackets into gold and silver based on pool play results. If there wasn't a gold and silver it really doesn't matter.

I guess the bottom line is you have to play whoever your scheduled to play and pool play is much more important in a tournament when you are going for the gold bracket in D1. Makes the "who pitches in pool vs bracket play" alot more interesting though

I think Triple Crown looks at each teams record in previous tournaments and other leagues and tries to put two top teams in each poolwith two lower teams . That way you want have a team that should stay in the Gold Bracket play against the best teams in pool play and drop to Silver Bracket.Otherwise if you have say-Longhorns ,Rays ,Titans and Wildcats in one pool then more then liokely two would go to the Silver bracket because of record and head to head. So I doubt pool selections are random.

11U Fan, I think a lot of what you say makes sense, how many times have we seen the top teams play each other in pool play. My only question would be, how would Triple Crown know who the top teams are early in the season?

In the case of the Slugfest, what I see there is a dozen teams who can win this thing. There is no clear cut favorite and with 26 teams, I would imagine at least 12 teams will advance to Gold which means 4 bracket games for some teams. This will strain any pitching staff since you only get 6 innings per player.

BravesFan, My guess is they will look at the couple of Spring tourneys played before the slugfest starts (spring frost & sandy plains tourney), then the Fall and then last Spring. TC usually does their homework so I am sure they will get it as mostly right.

I am not sure there are 12 teams that could win this one, Probably 8 maybe as many as 10 but that is still a bunch.

You bring up a great point in the bracket games if there are 12 that make it to gold. It will be pretty important to be in the top 8 to avoid the play-in game. Definitely will be a big test early in the season on the pitching and avoiding that extra game could make the difference and also makes the pool games more important.

Should be a great tournament!

Bravesfan, How in the HECK is there no clear cut favorite in this tourney?? Just a couple posts ago you told us how great the Rays are......4 of their starting 9 are the best in the state at their position!!! I kinda think the rest of us are playing for second....

Sparty,

I never claimed they were the best 4 in the state but simply the strongest group up the middle. The Rays will be a contender in this but there are a group of strong teams from east cobb, 643, GA Titans and I hear the Diamond Dogs have some bite to them this yr.

Don't forget about the TC Spring Frost too, that one is shaping up to be a good one as well.

I must have misunderstood your post, I thought you said the Rays were the strongest in the state at the catcher SS, 2B, and CF positions.....Who knows, maybe somebody else will be able to pull of a win these first two tourneys

It's sounds like everyone is playing for second place this year if the Rays have the best group up the middle or best 4 players in the state. Whatever was said or wasn't said. I can't wait to see who these kids are. I think 11UFan, Grandpa and BravesFan will attend just a couple of the Rays games this year. They seem to be pretty excited about there team.
Either the Rays are going to win every tournament they enter or two things happened along the way. Either the other positions weren't real strong or they didn't have the best 4 kids in the state up the middle.

My sources are telling me good things about Yankees and Stars this year. Can't wait for this tournament.

S4, LOL

I do think the Rays will be in the top tier but...those Longhorns were probably the best team this Fall and will be tough to beat with all of that talent they've got. I also think the Mocc's will show well. If what everyone is saying is true about 643, Ga Titans and others this tourney will give us all a good idea which teams will be the most competitive this Spring. Too bad the Braves and Stealth aren't in it (at least for 11U) but it looks like a great field of teams for a great cause!

This is going to be a good one!

I think the top 4 teams in the Slugfest IMO will be the Longhorns, Rays, Stars and Titans.......It will come down to who pitches well....Mine doesn't pitch worth a flip for the first month of the season. He never has and I'm not too concerned about it, it allows us to save a little arm for later in the season. I just want spring to hurry up and get here...I wish the Bravos and Stealth would play, I would rather lose a close game against a great team than blow out a middle of the road team...Our boys learn a lot more when competing against the best, both coaches and opposing players.

Hi All - most know who I am, but I'm one of the parents on the Rays. Our kids finished the fall season playing well, and we're excited about the prospects for the spring season. IF the kids work hard to prepare, and jell as a team - I look forward to seeing them compete in the spring.

In an earlier thread, Bubba asked who folks thought were the top teams in the state. The Longhorn fans & families were quite vocal (deservedly so), and I personally think thats great. They had a fantastic fall, and added some more talented players to the mix.

Interesting that its OK for some parents/family members to be outspoken about their team - but some posters seem to take offense when others do the same!

Lets remember these kids are only 11 years old. They are not major leaguer's, and have a long way to go & grow. One thing I think we can all agree on is that this is shaping up to be a very good, competitive spring season!

Hopefully we can get this thread back to the topic - the Slugfest!! There is a ton of very talented teams in the field, and should be some very exciting games.

Our fans are definitely the most outspoken....I do think there is a difference in posting how successful your season was compared to putting certain kids on a pedestal, and discounting other teams. That is the only exception I think anybody(and it was a few more people than you would think) took to a comment about having the 4 best kids in the state. Especially with the GROWN MEN who use an alias or "would rather stay anonymous" on here, it is becoming a joke. In my opinion the 2 best players at this age group play 12 and the 3rd plays for the Stealth....I don't think it is a good thing for coaches when parents or fans who aren't even with a team get on a message board and say that one particular team has the best SS or CF or C in the state. If it was that easy to get the best the contracts would be flying around!!! I speak to Preston every time I see him and he is a great guy, I don't think for a second he likes 90% of this undue attention his team gets on here, I know I don't. I have no problem saying that the Longhorns had a GREAT fall, we won most of our games but it was the fall!! If we show up this spring and get shelled by the Braves or Stealth I don't think it will surprise many people, that said it is ridiculous to argue over who is third best at this point.

Another thing to add on to what Preston said about how this season is shaping up, I have wrestled with letting mine "play down" for two seasons now. I personally believe the 12U age group is "deeper" and maybe top to bottom more talented, and while there still isn't a Bandits type team in 11U I can see some new teams making some noise this upcoming season. Including the Longhorns/Rays/Stars and I hope I finally get a good look at the EC Titans, we just might have a little more parity this season.

Gents,
I understand that you are all proud of your teams cuts, additions, how you did in the fall but it will happen, as it does everyyear, there will be only 2-3 good teams then all the rest. Its good to have hope until its Sunday morning and your coach is trying how to save your #1 guy for the finals but he dooesnt have anybody to get them TO the finals, so therefore, he tries to throw a midlevel guy(#2) and you get beat or he has to throw the #1 kid and then youre basically done after that. The fall was easy because there were not many teams so some could save there #1 kid for the finals, so we will see how that pans out when all the top teams are taking the field.

I've never been a big fan of tooting your own horn, let your teams play show on the field. Does it really matter if your the #3 or #6 team in the state? All I want is for the team to be competitive as we step up to majors this season.

As far as Bubba and the top 4 teams in the state, we were not in the running and rightfully so. IRRC, those teams were the Braves, Stealth, Grays and Stars and that was a consensus opinion. We haven't done a thing yet to earn that right but maybe we can compete with a few of these great teams this spring.

I hear good things about 643 as well. Looks like they have added a bunch of talent. Its too bad they lost there big stud pitcher to a 12u team. He would have been lights out with this team. It's all about pitching or "middle infield" for some teams. Got to love these "confident" teams before the first pitch has been tossed. Every team is the spring training champ.

To reply to Prestont. It's not that some posters are proud of there team and others can't say the same things. Everyone should be excited about there team. It's different because some teams outspoken posters try to do it without admitting who they are with. It's a little obvious and the dog or cat or whatever the phrase is out of the bag. Ive heard braves fan or should we say rays fan and 11u fan are the same person.
