So when does the 9U "chatting" get started up? Other than the Who's the Top 5 not much else to read. I'm a newbie on this website and like what I see so far...just want more discussions. Happy Holidays!

This has been a pretty quiet age group on this board from what I can tell, but I will do my best to keep the conversation going!!!

Yep - this time of year KILLS me. My son doesn't play basketball. College football is over til the bowls. Thank Goodness the Falcons are still in the hunt in the NFL. I absolutely can't WAIT until baseball starts back up. Last year (8U) was our first experience with travel ball, and it was AWESOME!!! We loved the families on our team, and loved the whole experience. There were very, very, very few negative experiences from opposing parents, coaches, and umps (wish I could say there were NONE, but oh well). All in all, it was just so much fun. In the winter, there's no traveling, no tournaments to gear up for, just so much slower paced. It's nice to slow down for a couple of weeks, but now I'm just dying to get back out on the road and watch the boys play. The other part I couldn't believe was the LEVEL of play by these kids. When I was 8 years old, we were SOOOO far behind where these kids are now, it's ridiculous.

Baldy...you could not be more right about the level of play. Sometimes I just laugh when watching a game and I think a kid is doing something wrong only to find out they are two steps ahead of me!
Shoot, I may be a little more seasoned than most, but when I was a kid, it was wood bats my coach who smelled like beer and a rusty backstop.
About your comment about opposing coaches, parents and what not, that was our experience as well. Such a nice departure from Rec all-stars and the craziness that spewed from it.
Merry Christmas!

SS-It sounds like with all the talk of the who's who chatting, as soon as the first tournament hits all the boards will be wide open. Can't wait!

HILARIOUS - that was my experience too. When I was 8, we weren't even playing coach pitch, it was still t-ball. We went straight to kid pitch as 9 & 10 year olds. Coach had a flat-top crewcut and was missing fingers from lawnmower accident. Each team had the big green equipment bag that had 4 helmets (usually only one of them fit, so everyone fought over that one), 4 or 5 crappy bats with one decent one that everyone on the team used, and the catcher's equipment in it. Remember how HEAVY the bats were back then? The bases were strapped down loosely, and the outfields all had wild onions growing in them. We played about 12 or 15 rec games and then had "All Stars" When I was a kid, our All-Star team couldn't have beaten almost all of the travel teams we saw this past year.

Merry Christmas to you as well, and thanks for bringing up those memories.

So my 8yo comes downstairs this morning and says, "Dad...(long pause) Christmas is over! It's time to get back to practicing. Lets go down in the basement and start hitting and throwing. I said, "Son, it's cold in the basement!"(basement unfinished) He says, "You can wear the jacket and gloves Mom got you for Christmas"
