Only based on what I have seen in the Fall, here are some teams to consider:

Oregon Park
West Forsyth Diamond Dawgs
N. Georgia Renegades
East Cobb Longhorns
Boynton Buzz (haven't seen them, but heard)

I have coached and watched this age group battle for the last 3 years.....this age group is extremely talented and the top 5 in my opinion can beat each other at any given time. With the merge of a few teams, this spring and summer should provide some outstanding competition on the field....here is my list in no particular order....

Copperheads
Rhinos
Raiders
Gamers
Yarddogs

Couple teams that could make some noise this year too

Atl Angels....8 year old squad that will blow your socks off

Dacula Falcons

HP Mudcats.....they did make it to the state finals last year and in some opinions, belong in that top 5

watch out for the Hitters. The Bad Boys beat ECB Braves at Nation Fall State and the Gamers won a Triple Crown tourney. We played the Gamers and they are strong.

The ECB Longhorns 9u should be tough after playing 9u ball all last year when they were 8. If the play their age, watch out!!!

The GA YardDogs-Black 9u already punched their ticket to the Elite 32 world series after dominating a number of good teams from North & South Carolina and Tenn. If anybody can match their pitching, it's going to be a "sure enough party",

Gamers Red reloaded adding some nice pieces from the Gamers Blue.

Rumor is the Sharpsburg Cardinals have teamed up with GA Academy Baseball and if they added a few pieces with the pitching they had, the could challenge some top teams.

I heard a lot about the Buzz. Can't wait to see them on the field.

I too have coached this age level since six and it's loaded with talent. I like the picks, all of those teams will do well. Longhorns, Yarddogs and Raiders are all powerhouses right now. The ECB Braves have a nice squad, but I'm not sure they have an ace on the mound. Their defense and good hitting will keep them in a lot of games.

Watch out for the Oregon Park Sharks. A merge of 7 super talented OP kids with a couple ECB Warriors, a 9U ECB Titan and the stud SS from the Dizzy Dean Powder Springs Indians. But, I may be a little biased about this team:)

I'm sure there will be more that will pop up as the season progresses. Teams that played coach pitch last year will adjust and compete, ie Buzz Baseball. Nobody forget about those boys, they can play up there. And someone was spot on about the 8U Angels. They are an incredible 8U team that will dominate their age group and give a lot of 9U teams heck. If you draw them in pool play, don't make the mistake a lot of other teams are making by taking them lightly.

It's hard to say most teams add players week to week due to football and you really aren't able to judge the real team till Spring. I do know that the Georgia Hitters domitaded the ring series in Winder. The N.Gwinnett team is strong and the Carrolton Renegades have an impressive record against some 10u teams. My #1 pick would have to be the Raiders.

Longhorns are an East Cobb team that played 9U as 8 year olds last year and did really well. With them playing 9U again this year, they're going to be really strong. They've gone through a little bit of churn as they've dropped a couple of the originals from Hobgood Park in Cherokee County and have mixed in some kids from further south. They are strong.

Buzz was a juggernaut in the coach pitch level. They are HUGE and I mean HUGE kids. If you haven't seen them before, you won't believe that they found 10 kids in the north Georgia/Chattanooga area that are all that size. They wailed on the baseball and played great defense in coach pitch. Their pitching, obviously, will be the key.

Other strong teams from the coach pitch level that will be moving up will be Newnan Legends, Georgia Generals, and River Bandits.

The 9U EC Longhorns core is from the Hobgood 7U Dizzy Dean WS Championship team from two yrs ago. They played all 9U tournaments last season with a lot of success. Very solid team and will be at or near the top in GA.

Baseball starts early in the North...well at least the chatter! We have had a great deal of experience with teams from the South & very little exposure from the North Atlanta teams, but I will give it a try. I will leave out our team (Mudcats)!

South Top 5 in no particular order including the East:
Raiders, Gamers, Yard Dogs Black, Rhinos, Yard Dogs Red ( I hear the Grissom team, HP & Cardinals will be competitive)

North Top 5 in no particular order based on teams I have seen or played in 2010:
East Cobb Braves, West Forsythe, East Cobb Longhorns (Wow), Georgia Select, Copperheads (I have never seen the Buzz play but know they are stacked...any travel team out of North Cobb Alpharetta & Gwinnett will be loaded & very cpmpetitive!)

On a side note the Mudcats are no longer affiliated with Home Plate & are playing independently. mudcats1.com is our new website. Contact me @ 770-689-6643 / eltreysmith3@yahoo.com for scrimmage / tournament request.

I love it, Bo. The gauntlet has been laid down - in early December - Longhorns run the table in 2011 at the 9U level, huh? Not saying it can't happen, because I've seen them play, and they are good. But that will be a very impressive accomplishment, given the number of really good teams expected at the 9U level this year. It's gonna be fun!!!

I like the list... But, Longhorns will not go unbeaten. Too many good arms out there to shut them down in a 1 game situation, whether it be pool play or bracket play. They are the team to beat, tho.

Team to beat??? Really?

Where I come from, the team that brought home the hardware is the team to beat! And NO I'm not affiliated with them.

With all this talk about the Longhorns, I'm really interested in watching this squad go to work! I gather there are quite few Longhorn admirers out there.....I do have question though. I want to make it clear that I'm not here to bash anybody and I understand the philosophy to a point....but with such a great deal of compettition in this age group last year, why didn't the Longhorns at least play one or two tournaments in there age group last year?

I may be bias , but I think the Buzz will do well.
I can't wait to see some match ups against the teams listed here.
Good luck to all this season!

8U rules are a joke and they wanted to play real baseball, plus they where winning at the 9U level.

I'm positive that the Buzz will do well. They have the "ahh" factor with their size and hitting, but they also played exceptional defense with kids drilling the ball at them in coach pitch. My guess would be that, like most of the teams coming up from coach pitch, they will be a lot stronger in May after they've gotten a few kid pitch games under their belts.

I'm curious as to how often we'll see a lot of these top teams in the same field. Seems like there were north tourneys and south tourneys last year, and this coming year there will be "far north" tourneys with Dalton hosting some USSSA events. There are several strong teams from up there besides the Buzz (Generals, Chattanooga Colonels). How often do y'all think we'll get 8 or 10 of these top teams in the same tourney?

If you've been coaching for the last 3 years, surely you remember the Hobgood team from 7's?? They were the most dominant team in the age group then. They continued their great play as 8 year olds in the 9U age group. They played in mostly "major" tourneys and while I'm not sure they knocked off a "major" team, they beat teams most other 8yo teams couldn't beat. They've reloaded and will be even better this year. To make it clear, I'm not affiliated with this team and I look forward to playing them and having a chance to knock them off.

I also look forward to seeing the Buzz. Been in a few battle's with them in Dizzy Dean. Very well coached with some great athletes!!!

Can't base anything off of fall ball...losts of these kids played football. But, I agree, this is an extremly talented age group.

Top 5
GA Raiders
Copperheads
Yard Dogs
Mudcats
Longhorns

You have to start with the Raiders until somebody beats them...toss up from there.

My son played with the Select last season in 8u KP and we either played or saw several of these teams. I understand that teams change and some very good CP teams transition quickly and will compete well in 9U.

Top 5
GA Raiders
Gamers (mix of red and blue)
Yard Dogs
Blue Jays
Hitters

Copperheads (very strong well coached)
WFDD (Very strong well coached , best parent group you will play against)
Mudcats (played them early , very solid)
Rhinos (solid)

never saw Longhorns or Buzz.

My son has played against most of the top teams and I have watched these teams for the last 3 years.
The number 1 team has to be the Raiders until someone beat them in the big game. They won Sub State, State and World Series last year.
It is going to be very interested to see how the Gamers, Rhinos and Mudcats hit the ball without a coach pitch bat.

Top 5
Raiders
Yard Dawgs
Gamers
Atl Bluejays
Cooperheads

Cardinals--look good from Sharspburg

Baldy...I hope there are some real power packed weekends. As a parent I would rather see the kids play stronger fields. Last year it was hard with teams dropping and other things going on.
It is better for the kids to play the better teams and lose some then play weak team. I know the coaches feel this way and had to deal with a lot of frustration last year trying to find top tier comp.
After watching some YouTube vide0 it looks like ball and strikes calls will be the major source of indigestion this year.
