With most all 13U tournaments around here being 54' mounds and 80' bases, you really don't make the jump to 60'/90' yet, unless you plan to jump straight to playing 14u tournaments.

Most players are not ready to make the 70' to 90' jump all at one time, which is the great part about the transition year of 13u (54'/80').

Not entirely true about the field dimensions for 13U. In the case of AAU Nationals the "infield" dimensions are 60'6" and 90' bases.

13U
Base length: 90 feet.
Pitching distance: 60 feet 6 inches.
Preferred fence distance: 275 - 325 feet.
Game length: Seven (7) innings.

USSSA By-Laws lists the "infield" dimensions as 54' and 80' and even has same dimensions for 14U AAA and AA; 14U Majors play 60'6" and 90'.

I'm almost sure though here in Georgia, USSSA TD's do offer 60'6"/90' for some 13U events. Can someone confirm what was played at this past season's Elite 32?

Triple Crown Sports also offers 60'6"/90' for 13U events including Fall Nationals in a couple months.

Foul,
Around here, though, none of the 13U events are 60/90. (That could change this year but so far that has been the case.)

The TC Fall Nationals in FL are 60/90 but all the ones here in GA this fall are 54'/80'.

FL tournaments typically do go to 60/90 at 13U. The Elite, however, is still played at 54/80, which has had adverse effects on some FL teams in the past.

The AAU Nationals are 60/90, which is a perfect transition between 13u and 14u. I wish the Elite 32 would do the same thing. By that time all 13u's should be playing 60/90.

Southside you need to put a premium on hitting . Learn how to hit the offspeed stuff. Flamethrowers are not nearly as effective at this age group. So you also will need to have several pitchers who can locate and mix up 3 or 4 different pitches If you don't have these arms on your staff I suggest you find them. My experience showed the kids who have dominated up until this point were not nearly as effective last year in 13s. Also make it a point to practice at least 3 times a week.Outfield also really needs to be strong and know the game.

I agree. This seems to be the year where you can no longer hide the kids with below average speed in right field. Seems like the big challenge is how to get the big power hitters in the line up and still be effective on defense on the big field. 1st base (and maybe third and second base) becomes a very competitive spot as there seems to be 2 or 3 kids who hit with power, can bring it from the mound, who are competing for spots where need for speed is not so important. If they want to get on the field as opposed to pitch or DH/EH then they have to earn one of these spots. Used to be able to hide them in the outfield, does not work so well now as anything that gets by the big slow kid right field is now a triple instead of a single...
