Scenario: The 1st baseman is pulled to the home plate side of first base by an errant throw. He catches the ball in the baseline approximately 3 feet from 1st base. The runner moves a little outside the line to avoid the 1st baseman and, in the process, misses 1st base while running past the base. The 1st baseman then tags the runner before he can step on 1st base.

The field umpire called the runner safe, ruling the 1st baseman had obstructed the runner.

Is this the correct call?

The timing of the play is key. Obstruction could be the proper call in some situations there. The fielder also has to make an obvious appeal of the missed bag. Just your garden variety tag doesn't always get it done.

If the runner contacts the fielder we could have interference, it is a gotta see it type of play.

Thank you, everyone. That was my interpretation of the rules as well.

Bad call by the umpire. The runner took a bad angle, he should not be rewarded because of that. If there had been contact as CaCO3 said, its just a train wreck.

On a different note, how many strikes have the umpires missed/not called during the WS. Call strikes, that is how we speed up the game.

My understanding is that if the player in question of obstruction was waiting on the ball, and the ball was coming to him, then he was not obstructing. The runner would have been within his rights to plow through the first basemen to preserve his path to the base.

Interested to see what HeyBlue and other umps think on the matter.
