Ball put in play. Ball over thrown in attempted play at third lands in dugout and ruled dead ball. Batter/runner is nearing 2nd, but has not reached the bag at time of dead ball. What base should the batter/runner be awarded?

Thanks for the rule clarification, just trying to better understand this rule.

Depends. Was it first throw from an infielder or any other throw. Read the details in this link. It's either one or two bases, depending on the specific situation. This describes the scenarios pretty well.
