7.07.G Whenever a tag play is evident, a runner must slide or seek to avoid contact with the fielder and / or catcher.
Attempting to jump, leap, or dive over the fielder and / or catcher is not interpreted as seeking to avoid contact. Malicious contact shall supersede all obstruction penalties.
Penalty: The runner shall be called out and may be ejected from the game at the umpire’s discretion.
Rule 7.07.G Comment: When enforcing this rule, the umpire should judge the runner’s intent. If the umpire feels that the contact was unintentional, then the runner should only be declared out. If the umpire feels that the contact was intentional and / or malicious, then the runner should be declared out and ejected.

Situation: Runner stealing home on pass ball, pitcher covers home, tag play is evident, runner chooses not to slide just runs straight through plate. Pitcher not blocking plate, contact is made by runner into pitchers arm as he catches the ball. Umpire calls kid safe because he just beat the tag. Contact was unintentional, runner was not being malicious. Now due to the rule above, What's the call

Runner taking home on a passed ball is technically not stealing home, but I digress. Based on your description, I am seeing F1 in front of the plate with arm extended across the plate to receive the ball as you stated he was not blocking the plate and the runner ran straight through the plate. You also stated later that the runner beat the ball. Based on what you have posted, I have no tag evident. I also do not have malicious contact. I would have ruled "that's nothing, safe" based on what you have shared.

It was my understanding that up until I think 11 or so sliding at home is mandatory if a play at the plate is even possible.

Any organization that ever requires a slide rule is opening themselves up to a lawsuit to cover the medical bills of players injured in a slide.

Bad calls are part of the history of baseball and will be forever....just ask Armando Galarraga in 2010 he was pitching for the Tigers and was robbed of a perfect game by a blown call in the 9th on a not even close play at first...take some solace, it happens at all levels, don't let it drive you or your kid nuts.

And even with the now present replay/review, there are still calls that are "Missed".........so its even that much more frustrating. I have wondered on more than one occasion if the umps are seeing the same replay I was watching

I actually sent this to U-Trip. There response was if the umpire says a tag play was evident and the runner chooses not to slide, then if any contact is made the runner is out. The only judgment the umpire has is weather a tag play was evident, if so did the runner slide or not. If he doesn't slide and contact is made was it malicious or accidental. If accidental then the runner is out/if malicious or intentional then the runner is out and ejected

Not an umpire, but ... remember that #1 (was a tag play evident?) is a judgement call. The intent of the rule is to avoid collisions, so the umpire has to look at why the runner didn't slide. Based on what you are describing, the umpire could decide that running straight through home was trying to "avoid contact".

That I agree with. Are there any Umpire's out there that can explain this Rule for myself and CaCO3Girl???
CaCO3Girl Posted - 03/03/2015 : 10:08:37
Well honestly I am not an umpire, but my kid has always been told to slide at the plate if a play is even possible or you will be called out.

I have also found that several umpires hired for various tourneys may not know the actual tourney rules...for example you may get a high school ump who knows that rule book, but not all the nuances of USSSA rules.

The age was 10u. The rule which was copied and pasted directly from GA USSSA rule book does not specify any age. Yes the pitcher caught the ball, it was a close play but the runner beat the throw. The pitcher was not obstructing the plate. The runner I believe thought it wasn't going to be as close as it was. Umpire called the kid safe and the opposing coach asked for that Rule to be applied. My understanding of the rule when I read it is:
1. was a tag play evident(if yes)
2. did the runner slide(if yes/play is ok/unless he slid maliciously)(if runner didn't slide then we continue)
3. runner didn't slide and made contact(now we have to look at was it malicious or unintentional contact)
4. unintentional contact(runner's out)(malicious/intentional contact out and ejected)

Please correct me if I'm reading this wrong.
