Posted - 07/29/2013 : 15:44:46 I highly suggest joining Marietta Umpires. 7/8 yr old baseball is boring. Marietta provides great training and while your son may not be able to do high school games because of his age, Marietta has middle school games and he could apply his training to get better games from Strohs. |

Slider...where do you live???
4 basic rules: 1. HUSTLE. Never stand around. Be in position to make the call. 2. Dress professional. Clean shoes, tucked in shirt, and for the love of God, don't turn your hat around backwards when behind the plate. 3. Be respectfully confident. Pause and make sure you are sure of the call. Don't interject yoruself in the game for all the wrong reasons. With him being younger, coaches WILL try to bully him. Always try to remember the both manager's first name. It helps, and if in doubt, just call him coach. 4. Mask in left hand, never in right hand. 5. HUSTLE. Don't just stand there. MOVE. My suggestion is for him to start at the 7/8 yo rec ball ge group and get a feel for moving around the field. At this age, you are still able to to work behind the bases for the most part. The speed of the game is slower which helps with learning how to move the game along. This will just give him the feel of it. Then move up to the next age group, this will show him how to work inside the bases. Pitchers are a little more on target and the parents are a little more vocal. Then he will be ready to move up to my favorite age group 11/12, especially 12. Pitchers start mixing up their pitches, hitters can hit, and the game starts picking up speed nicely. Working the two younger age groups will have allowed him to combine what he has learned and have to confidence to do the job.

Posted - 04/16/2013 : 18:19:32 Slider5 - tell your son I said thank you. it's a thankless job (except for the little pay they get) and we need to keep filling the pipeline with good young talent. I hope he works hard at it and sticks with it. |
