Posted - 03/20/2013 : 09:06:10 If the ball hits the ground before it's caught or missed, it's a throwing error. It's only an error on 1B if it's a routine catch that's missed. While you want and need a 1B who can pick the ball well, not doing so does not constitute an error on him since it's not a routine play for him. To be more specific to your question, the velocity of the throw is irrelevant if the ball's in the dirt. Consider a comebacker to the pitcher who fields it cleanly and takes a couple of steps toward first before underhanding a rainbow that short hops and glances off 1B's glove. Error on the pitcher on the throw, even if the 1B would make that "pick" 999 out of 1,000 times. |
