Posted - 04/24/2014 : 20:27:19 Any medical folks on the board who have information about how to care for a 12U arm? Preventive ice, aspirin, running to get the blood flowing after pitching/catching? If ice, within how much time after the game and for how long? Our team has had a few sore arms and injuries so this has been on my mind for my son who often plays catcher. Thanks! |

Posted - 01/20/2015 : 20:22:36 Thanks all! We have a 13U catcher now. This advice is still pertinent and much appreciated.
Our 12U team was highly competitive with some pitchers who could flat out throw! Some of our boys regularly iced their arms after pitching, and I did not hear of any issues. I kept hearing icing is important for catchers too. But my son really never took to regularly icing his arm, even though we bought that really cool looking Pro Ice arm sling. Maybe that is a good thing, based on the info you guys have provided, so long as he is working on proper mechanics. CaCO3Girl, the arm soreness problems - no serious injuries - were primarily at the beginning of the season, perhaps from start-up after the break? At the time, it would not have been from over-use. |

Posted - 01/15/2015 : 16:56:40 Hi All - my son is 15u now, but was fortunate to play @ 10u 11u for a coach who used to pitch for GaTech & the Atlanta Braves. Probably one of the best pitching coaches my son has worked with (along with John Devore, who was a gem). The coach injured his arm when he made it up to ATL, so he was OVERLY protective of kids arms. His focus was teaching/learning good mechanics.
From what I recall..... his view was once ya start icing, you have to continue to do so - delay icing until you really need to.
Over the last couple years, one of the common quotes we hear from pitching coaches in the programs my son has played was that his arm probably never gets sore b/c of his mechanics - and it has been true.
Oddly enough.... one of the HS coaches tried to mess with my sons mechanics in a 2-on-1 session and his arm was sore the next day :-) |

Posted - 01/14/2015 : 16:24:19 What the goodness is happening at 12u that arms need icing? An 11/12 year old should not have sore arm issues unless he is being grossly overused, or throwing pitches his body isn't ready for yet.
My son is on a 12u team and his primary positions are catcher, pitcher, and 1B and I have never heard of such a thing. |

Posted - 01/14/2015 : 12:07:59 Personally I think Running after pitching etc is something coaches do now because they did it when they were coming up and there is no scientific evidence to support the whole lactic acid release. I also think icing every injury and after throwing is another one of those myths. Icing actually delays healing, Its funny because the guy who invented the R.I.C.E. Therapy treatment has come out saying it was completely wrong. Just some food for thought. |
