We filled in with a team this week and experienced something I'd not seen before. The coaches intentionally lost their final pool game to ensure placement in the lower bracket. The team, in my opinion, was strong enough to compete in the Gold bracket. Expectedly, they dominated on Sunday, run-ruling in the championship game. They waved their trophies around and everyone considered the weekend a great success.
I'm just curious about how others feel about this. Personally, I was aghast that a coach would do this. In the game they intentionally lost, the kids were none the wiser and were playing their hearts out. But the coach squashed their hopes by putting two non-pitchers on the mound in the final innings. The kid who lost the lead hadn't pitched in years and was obviously distraught over having "blown" the game.
Is this something that is commonly done? It seemed that I was the only parent that was concerned about this. |
