I still think Cooperstown should go to wood bats

Website records, one kid hit 18 homeruns in one week. A girl hit 15. 73 by a team in one week. 14 by a team in one game?
Is this real baseball?

Bomberz won in pool play - 23-0, 26-0, 25-0, 25-0, 25-1, and 17-5. No doubt there. After a while you want to play a team that is equal. Maybe they will get that today in bracket play.

Only thing I would change would be to knock a bit of sense into Lou. He does not think highly of pro players and called them all thugs, etc during his Intro talk to the boys. Didnt help we had a Gold glove winners kid on our team, he refused to take it back or offer an apology to the kid. Great experience but he thinks a bit too highly of himself. Just my opinion.

Also GBC Team Acceleration and Dallas Royals are both Elite 32 this year..Suncoast Reebok is an elite team, Tampa Venom, Diamond Dawgs are both good teams..This to go along w funnyhop list of teams and this is an extremely talented field.

We got back from Cooperstown last week and I would say nothing needs to change. This was by far the best tournament I've ever attended and who cares if there were lots of homers, i gurantee the kids didn't mind. Can't wait for my next one to turn 12 so we can go back.

Lou (owner) has created the best experience for any child playing baseball and if your kid doesn't go there missing something special.

Doubtful. It's not the kids that think every weekend needs to be for a world championship.

As a parent, my biggest take-away from Cooperstown was, "Wow, these boys are ready to move up to the bigger fields." As far as the players were concerned, all the home-runs were fun. My kid wasn't a home run hitter, but he was on base when they happened, and it was cool for him to. And guess what? They did move up to the bigger fields after that. Not a huge fan of Cooperstown, other than the once-in-a-lifetime experience, but I don't think they ought to change.

Also, I think, if you look at the teams ln Cooperstown, the majority are rec/allstar teams, which may explain some of the gawdy HR #'s. Great tournament, huge for the kids, but if you compare it to the competition in other tournaments ( SNIT's, Elite 32) it's not the same.

MBA Pride, West Pine Nike Cobras, GA Roadrunners, Texas National Team, Bomberz (Ca), Lamorinda Monarchs, etc......all Elite 32 caliber and all played at Cooperstown Week #2. I believe some of these teams will give all anyone can handle at the Elite 32. In fact, didn't one of them beat one of the GA local "best teams" once or twice this year?

Cooperstown is an absolute must in my book. My son is 16 and he still remembers a ton about it. We were just talking the other day. He had a very good tournament. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 1 hit and no runs. Went 4 for 5 at the plate with 2 singles, a double and a HR. I told him that was probably his best tournament ever. He said, not really, Cooperstown was better. He pitched 10 innings there allowing no runs, batted something like .575 with an OBP of over .600 and had 6 HR's. He considered that his best tournament. He went on to say that he had the second highest HR total on the team and knew who was the highest, who was tied with him and right behind him, when the HR's were hit, where they went, on and on. I was kind of taken aback at his memories of all this. And this is 4 years removed from the trip. I would venture to say that he will remember the Cooperstown trip for the rest of his life. Truly great stuff despite any short comings the tournament may have.

I think the hardest part related to Cooperstown is keeping the tournament in the right context. It is not the "toughest tournament of the season" but it IS an experience that kids typically only have once in their lifetime (yes, I know they have a 10U week and that some kids go more than once, but 99% of all kids only go once). If you miss it at 12U, you can't go, which to me for a kid playing baseball, is a terrible shame.

It is learning about the roots of baseball. It is the transition to being around a lot of other baseball players, and away from your parents overnight. It is learning how to prepare for games, how to eat to prepare to play, how to get your laundry done, etc.

2 years removed, my son still really loves talking about Cooperstown. Hopefully one of these days he and I can take a team back there to play.

I wouldn't consider 200 foot homeruns by 12 year olds long balls more like pop ups or fly balls. To me real baseball includes triples and doubles not a bunch of singles. I guess without moving the fence back a wood bat wouldn't change that.

Chicks dig the long ball !!!!
ecbstix Posted - 06/11/2010 : 20:27:03
If you spend time coaching fundamentals (pitching, defense),field size shouldn't matter. If you live by the long(?) ball, you would love to play on short fields. So I believe, for the enjoyment of ALL teams, it should stay as it is. Think about it, for most of the kids that play this tournament, this is the most important tournament that they will ever play in. Let them enjoy it.

If you are a good pitcher you don't have to hate it. My son went to Cooperstown, pitched 10 innings, allowing no runs.

To answer the original question, I personally like wood bats for everything. We played in a bunch of wood bat tournaments last summer and are playing in one right now. I really like it a lot better. Might not hit as many HR's, but if you hit the ball solid, it will travel. I think it evens the playing field for the pitchers. Honest hits will still be hits. Hits not on the sweet spot (which is what pitchers are trying to do), will more often than not, be outs. College should really go to wood. JMHO.

All I know is 100+ teams go up there every week, for 14 weeks, year after year. Apparently the model does not need to change to draw more teams, or better teams, because they are maxed out and always get the top teams to come throughout the playing season. The only thing changing the layout would do is reduce the number of teams that go. They don't have the capacity to take more so until teams find a better option, CDP has the right plan.

It is a novelty tournament that a kid typically can only go to once. (Twice if they go at 10 or go up as a 11) It carries a different meaning than any other tournmanent.

If you are a hitter you loved it, if you are a pitcher, you hated it.

Rocky, have you ever seen a kid hit a home run before who's never done it before ? It's incredible and makes you really happy for them. Every kid should know how that feels. The 200 ft. porch allows that to happen at Cooperstown.

You ask is it real baseball ? If the fence stays the same length for both teams, I'd have to say yes.

Now, would I want to play 12U baseball consistently on a 200 ft field....HECK no !!! But once in a while isn't so bad, is it ?
