Kind of curious on the speed issue. To help some of the Coaches out there, parents and fans, anyone willing to share their knowledge on time ranges for 40 yds for various age groups ? What's considered fast, average and below average for each age group ?

1st of all, baseball measures speed in the 60yd dash. Not sure about the younger age groups, but for high school recruiting for college or pro, a decent time is around 7.0-7.2, 6.8-7.0 would be above average, 6.5-6.8 is way above average and will get you an immediate opportunity and below 6.5 is pretty much world class and someone will figure they can teach you how to play baseball if you are a marginal player.

Doing some times in a football camp had an 8 year old run a sub 6 second 40. That is cooking. Keep in mind though IMO 40's at a young age do not mean much. Like a 20 yard time or 30 better. Baseball speed is different.

6O yds has been the distance of choice for MLB.. a position player needs to be under
7 seconds. 6.7-6.9 is avg major league speed. under 6.7 will catch the eye of scouts as above avg speed. get under a 6.6 and have ANY skills what so ever and you be given a chance with a minor league contract.

I believe they time the 60. Don't know what is considered fast.
