Recently in a tournament in Cumming, the higher seeded team came and wanted the dugout currently being occupied by a lower seeded team that just won their bracket game.
Is there an unwritten rule that the higher seeds gets to choose their dugout? |

There are lots of in-the-moment TEACHING advantages that are afforded to a youth Manager/Third Base Coach with his team in the 3rd base dugout. Aside from that, tell your players to focus on what they do on the field, not where they sit in the dugout.
As for cheating, its easy to agree that its a shame to teach such tactics. But, as long as there has been competition, there have been those who seek advantage by not playing by the rules. Its simply a question of character and each team's decision about fair play. |

I always told my boys...."this is our lucky dugout" ( regardless of which one you're in ). Inevidably ( sp ? ), they'd ask why....and my answer has always been..." because our TEAM is in it" !!!! |

If you are teaching your team these plays.. you need to get out of the game. If you can't win within the rules, Get out. I thought our job as coaches is to teach them the game and to improve their game and take them to the next level. If you are so worried about winning that you are willing to cheat, what are you telling those kids. Would you want someone to teach your kid how to cheat? Justify all you want.. you can't lie to yourself. And its not part of the game. And if you are going to be so petty about a dugout come on. If the other team is set up by that dugout.. let it be. Also in a tournament,, if the team is already in the dugout from the previous game.. don't try to make them move. You come across looking like an idiot. |

I always try to get to the field early so I can get a dugout so my parents can go ahead and set up their tents and toys for the younger kids. I also try to find the other coach to works this out ahead of time.
It is amazing how some coaches act out there! |

The "cheating" goes on in High School. The worst is that when one of the Cobb County teams has a left handed pitcher, he is taught how to "balk" every time a man is on first. Some of the other schools ordered 3 umpires when they played this team at home.
The skipping third cheat was used in a High School game a few years ago.
I have always felt that you need to spend 1 practice in the winter on how teams will cheat to beat you, and ways you can better your chance. The better prepared your team is for something unexpected, the less chance they have of making a big deal out of it.
I always wanted the 3rd base dugout because it kept me safe from most right handed batters, but except for CDP, I don't remember a tournament where the dugouts were assigned. It was always first come first serve. |

I heard a coach tell me about this play a couple years ago and I was floored! To teach these young kids to cheat so blattenly is amazing! I would like to hear some umpire's remarks on this one. If a play is developed to cheat to this extend, would it not deserve a stiffer punishment than just having the runner called out? There is a certain amount of morals still left in the game isn't there? |

I see new ways to cheat every year. I wont list them all because that could proliferate it. Its amazing how creative Coaches and parents can get. I don't blame 10/11 year old kids (our age group), they are not coming up w/ this junk....they are just one of the victims. |

We had a tournament game a few years ago. During the game before ours, we had placed our gear outside the dugout, but still out of the way. When the prevous game finished, the head coach for the oppossing team just pushed past me to get in the dugout. I commented that we were planning to take that dugout. He just said, not any more. We took the high road and let them have it. |

I would like to add to what alter ego has mentioned
i also like the dugout near the bathroom and concession stand sometimes those early morning games after 3 cups of coffer make it tough to stand on the field for 1hr 50 min and i also tend to have diet coke withdraw after about an hour |

Bet I know what team that was! I've heard of parents getting abusive when a team tried to use "Their" dugout! Grow up! |

If I am coaching 3B I want 3B dugout, if I am coaching 1B I want 1B Dugout.haha

The only reason I ever wanted a specific dugout was for one of the following reasons:
* If it was early in the season, I wanted the one that got the most sun.
* If it was in June/July, I wanted the one that had the most shade.
* If I had gone 2-0 in pool play using the 3B dugout, I wanted the 3b dugout for the next game.
* If I had gone 0-2 in pool play using the 3b dugout, I wanted to move to the 1b dugout.
Other than that, I couldn't care less. |

It's a dugout. A place to sit when you are not on the field or at bat. It should not matter...(unless it's your home field, not during tournament play, and you have a favorite dugout) Other than that, I say take a dugout and get to playing ball! |

If a team is itching to get the 3rd base dugout for no apparent reason, watch out for the by-pass 3rd base play.
If their runner is on 2nd, or 2nd and 3rd, alert your short stop and the field ump to keep an eye on the runner at 2nd to make sure he touches 3rd base on the push bunt towards 1st base. Much easier to pull off if the team executing that play has all their folks on the 3rd base side. We learned this the hard way.

Only if it's their home field and it's not a tournament. Tournament dugouts are up for grabs. MLB Teams and college teams Home Dugouts can be on either side.
The Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox have their home dugouts on the third base side. The Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres have always had their dugouts on the first base side. Atlanta Braves dugout is 1st base side. Ga Tech 3rd base side however it used to be the 1st base side. Ga Bulldogs 1st base side. |

That is similar to our game...we visited a local tournament which was hosted by team x, all of our players were there early put stuff in dugout and team x had a coach come tell us that was their dugout.
I never knew tournaments had pre-determined dugouts but being good soldiers we moved and then beat them |

It usually only comes up when the higer seed gets to be Home team, which goes in the first base dugout.
Etiquette usually says that if a team is already in that dugout, or has been camped out behind that dugout for the previous game, then they get it regardless of seeding. Otherwise the lower seed goes to the 3rd base dugout. |
