Well guys since it is snowing outside and there is no baseball to be played/watched, I decided to purchase and play with an iPhone baseball scoring program. I have been so impressed with the value of this program thus far that I wanted to share it.
The program is called iScore and it is very easy to use and has some really cool features. I have used a couple of other programs (palm based) and this one seems to be the most user friendly. Substitutions are easy, game setup is fast and the actual scoring seems quick and easy. You can e-mail game stats and season stats. But the coolest thing is that you can send it out as a gamecast so that parents who cannot attend can see whats going on. I have been playing with this at my house, so I am not sure how the gamecast works at the ball field.
Has anyone used this program for a full season and what did you think. I just bought it, so I have not field tested it yet (just entered a few games from last seasons scorebook). But I have been impressed so far. |

You can select the email option to send game info
Before you send you can select the format (any or all of HTML/Excel/CSV and whether
to include the scorebook) and whether to send either visitor or home information or
both.
YES...I got the program Saturday am...got it going but mucked up in the 3rd inning...got a lot better at in 2nd game...I guess I should have done a tutorial first...I really like the app!!!! I sent the stats to the coach at the end of day. WHAT A TOOL. I love the hit patttern it shows for the batter when they come up.... |

KoopsDad, we played a double header and the battery did fine. We used an iPhone and I turned it to Airplane mode so as to save battery power and so that phone calls did not come through during the game. I still had half of the battery life after both games, so I am guessing it could do 3 in a row. You can also get an external battery that plugs into an iPhone or iPod Touch that would extend the battery life much longer. I dont think I will get one because it looks like my battery will be fine.
Each time a batter comes up you can hit a button and see the history on that batter (its cumulative so it shows all the history on that batter not just that game). It shows spray charts and if the batter hit a fly, grounder if he was out/safe. It keeps up with the pitch count (breaks it out balls and strikes) so I can get rid of my clicker. So far, Ive been happy with it, but there is a learning curve, so I would suggest having someone keep a paper book until you have it down. |

How hard is it to go back and see what their batter did the last time he came up? Could be useful for charting their hitters if you can bring up the information in a reasonable amount of time. |

I too enjoy statistics and downloaded iScore. Anybody got feedback on how long you can actually use the program before the battery on the iPhone/Ipod will die? Curious to know if I will get more than one game. Any tips? Thanks! |

Well we tried this program out this weekend and I am very happy with it. I gave it to one of my moms and she had a tough time with the first game, but by the third game she was a pro. Like LeftyBat said, the information is very useful for a coach. I also noted that one of the tournaments (11U Feb Frost) used the iScorecast feature which allowed you to follow a game from your computer. Anyway, I just wanted to follow up and keep you posted. |

We had a parent use it last year with great success. Great for tracking other teams players tendencies as well. Really good as it gives you running comprehensive stats for season for every player. I know there were many times when if he did not get in real time, he got the scorebook and entered the data afterword. Great tool for a coach to see whats going on with his players, see who is hot, who is struggling and make adjustments. |

I downloaded it last spring and had intentions of using it, but since I don't keep the book I didn't have the time scoring the game with other responsibilities going on during the game. I think that if you got the hang of entering info on the fly it could be very useful - it's slow going until you know what you're doing on it.

I downloaded it in the fall but only played with a little bit. I am not the most tech savy person but it looks like all the stuff it does is pretty cool. Maybe someone on our team can show me how to use it. lol. For now paper for me and then maybe go back and enter info until i get the hang of it. |

Sirlurker, I agree that my favorite way of keeping score is on paper. If the weather would ever cooperate, I can give it a test run. If it does work well, the info you get (spray charts etc), would be very helpful. Of course it is hard to say until you use it for a while. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. |

Papa still keeps the score on his fingers and toes. High scoring games still give me problems. |

I downloaded iscore at the end of our season last year and used it for a couple of games...for a tech geek it is great...but for me I still like the feel of paper and pencil...I will be trying it again this year...my main problem and it is my problem not the programs problem is it was a little hectic and hard for me to make a line up at the last minute and make other changes fast on the iphone...was much easier for me to do a thrown together lineup and to make game time adjustments with pencil and paper...part of that is because I wasn't comfortable enough with the iscore program to make quick changes..that is why I will give it another go this year now that I am more used to using the program to see how it goes... |
