Would like to get some opinions and thoughts on a situation that I have recently heard about.
Lets say a coach of a 12-15 year old team hands out a punishment after every tournament, for every kid on the team at the following practice. If any player moves out of the way of getting hit by a pitch, that results in every player getting hit 5 times by a BP fastball at the following practice. So, if there are 5 batters getting out of the way of a pitch in one tournament, then every player(regardless if they stood their ground in the box and got hit by the pitch) gets hit with a BP fastball 25 times at the next practice. Does this seem like an appropriate punishment? |

All I can say is wow, if they used Tennis balls that would make more sense and it would do the exact same thing but why waster valuable practice time working on getting hit at this age when they obviously need to be working on something that matters more. Taking one for the team can win a game but there are not scholarships being offered for taking bean balls, how about working on bunting instead. What they are probably going to do is make them more afraid of getting hit than they already were. I would love to know what team or coach this is and keep my son far away. |

There are so many variables left out of any discussion.
But given the adaption of 85 mph fastballs vs taking 50 mph flips... Look I don't know the age group....but I do know you have a huge safety issue on your hands as a coach if your team can't turn away from the ball correctly. Even if that correctly causes you to be hit.
Jumping out of the way isn't going to always be the safest method to try.
The whole idea (hit or not) is to get your chest and head turned away. And sometimes that requires you to stand your ground and wear it.

I've always felt that situations like this is what the board was designed for! I am not looking to change anything here, and not looking to promote a negative or positive result, I was asking for opinions....is there something wrong with that? I am not here to serve any agenda or personal vendetta of sorts as what it appears you're suggesting. I am certainly not looking with everyone to agree with me, I get no vindication out of getting as many "likes" as I can.
Again, I have known guys to play for coaches that have promoted this at different levels and was curious if anyone else has heard of any current coaches and/or programs that encourage this culture.

Ryno23 - fair point; I'll accept your wanting this discussion. I suppose my point was mostly this - there can't be much debate here; this guy is not equipped to lead young men. It's abusive. My kid plays at the highest levels, and we parents would never allow it. I don't understand why we don't call out these guys out (by PROGRAM) more often - there is so much rumor and innuendo on this board, and we soft shoe around guys who give travel baseball a black eye.

First, they were not using tennis balls for this drill, I spoke to one of the parent on that team. They weren't being drilled by 88 mph heaters, but BP fastballs of about 50 mph from approx 40 feet away.
Secondly, there are times where taking one for the team is appropriate...i.e. late in the game and down on the scoreboard. I just find it crazy that a coach would want his 2-7 hitters wearing one instead letting his bat do the damage. And yes, if a kid is scared of the ball then they should probably find another sport to play. I GET IT!!!!!!

Good grief, at our academy we teach our players at a young age specifically how to turn and protect on very inside pitches. Obviously, plunkings happen and they do hurt. But once kids realize they can minimize the risk of injury from a HBP by turning properly, they gradually overcome fear and gain confidence at the plate.
For older players, I really coaches who demand their players take one for the team. Sure, I understand their are situations game situation dictates that player should try to get on by any means. But in general, what is learned by getting plunked? If we are all in this to supposedly help develop players, what experience is gained by being hit by an otherwise avoidable pitch. Coaches who teach this may have lost their way a bit. |

This is one of those unspoken things in baseball and should not be promoted in any way. It is totally up to the batter if they choose to "wear one" or not. No one wants to get hit, if they do something is seriously wrong with them Coaches should show them what to do if they do decide to take the hit. |

I've never heard of such a thing in baseball. Football where it's expected you are going to get hurt, but not baseball. Anyway if kids are afraid of the ball they shouldn't be playing. Beating the crap out of them is unlikely to make them less afraid imho. |

While your message is obviously extreme and potentially dangerous...........you aren't going to like my response. Are you sure they aren't using tennis balls for this drill?
If you can't take one for the team or stand your ground on pitches in some circumstances, then you need to find a different sport to play very soon. |

This is abuse. Plain and simple.
On a similar note, parents that yell at the batter to stay in there and get hit by a pitch during games. Then those same parents wonder why Johnny does not want to play next year. Maybe because we are forgetting that this is a game. |

I played with some guys when I was younger, that had college coaches that had similar beliefs. The coaches had a culture that you were weak minded or soft if you didn't 'take one for the team', regardless of the situation in the game! Take your base, and pass the bat to the next guy. I realize this was in college and drastically different that of teaching teenage boys. I found this to be absolute irresponsible behavior by the coach and felt like this had no place in youth/high school baseball. |

I'd say the parents should be taking all of the kids and hiring a new coaching staff. This is child abuse/endangerment at the very least. A parent who knowingly allows this to occur is just as much at fault. No grown man should be purposely hitting a child in any way with a hand or an object. This behavior tells me pretty clearly that the coach has no business working with kids of any age. Hand every kid a ball and tell them to take aim. If he moves, do it again, perhaps that will get the point across. |

Secondarily, how do you have a 12-15 year old span? Is this a middle school team, and the coach is a school coach?

The first time I saw this behavior would be the last. My kid would be gone in a hurry and I would have a real hard time not dealing out some punishment of my own. If this is true, that entire coaching staff should never be allowed around kids ever again. |

Wait... WHAT???? Have the coach stand there and get hit with a few pitches. He would have to show me he could take it before my kids does something as stupid as that. That coach would have big problems with me. Intentionally hitting my kid, means me intentionally hitting you. |

This is crazy. Most grown men don't want to "intentionally" get hit. More likely to "wear it" if you are padded up, but this is dumb. Would not be playing for a coach that did this. I believe in being tough on kids, but this is stupid. So is he going to pay the medical bill and damages the next time a kid "wears one" and he ends up with a serious medical issue? |
