Average?!? Wow. I would send the college scouts your schedule.

Allstar,I think Bandit13 is right on with his speeds. I know we had 3 kids in the 55-60 plus range at 10u. I don't think the Bandits have a starting pitcher that throws below 55 unless it's a change-up. I also think I know the kid he speaks of throwing 68 or so and when he throws that 47mph change and hits his spots, he is really hard to hit. There is a reason why this years 11u group is so active and it's because it is loaded with talent. If you don't believe Bandit13, come out and see the Bandits play some Sunday and be prepared to be amazed.

Actually, I wasn't refering to any kid in particular so don't look for him on our team. We have several very good pitchers but I still think that our defense makes them that much better. At 10 and 11u what I've seen is that the pitchers will have "on" days and "off" days. Some of them can be flat out unhittable when they are on and plain ordinary when they are off. This probably applies to all age groups though.

Scott0923, all of these guys are right on target that velocity is not the only thing to consider. They will also argue that all guns read differently too - correct again. It doesn't mean that the gun readings are useless. It also doesn't mean that someone with a faster than average fastball isn't harder to hit. Eventually, if all the kid throws is heat, he will get hit by the better teams though.

Now, the kid that throws faster than average, hits spots and changes speeds well is bringing the whole package to the table.

From my experience, the Bushnell guns that can be bought for $100 or so read 3-5 mph slower than the very expensive Juggs guns. The Juggs guns will be more consistent too. The angle from which you shoot has a bearing also. Try to be as consistent as possible with your angle when taking readings.

Agree with alter-ego. It's not all about the fastball. The good AAA and major teams will eat up any fastball. Focus on changing speeds and hitting spots to achieve the most success. I've seen many kids that can't break 45mph tie up some strong lineups.

I think you basically have to throw 10 and 11 into the same group because kids are growing at such different rates during that time.

for 10/11 - Average 50-55 above average is anything in the 60's or higher.
For 12 - Average is 55-65 with above average being 70+. I have seen some hit low 80's at this age, but they are rare. Older 12's and kids that are biologically 13 or 14.

Don't get caught up in the speed, though. Kids can hit a straight pitch, no matter how hard you throw. Hitting your spots, making the fastball move some, and throwing downhill are much more important skills.
