Below is an excerpt from AAU's announcement of changes to the format for National Tournaments.

The National Championship tournaments for 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U, and 13U will be held at the incomparable Disney’s Wide World of Sports® in Orlando, Florida.

The 9U and 12U Championships will take place June 21-26. One unique aspect of the 12U is that the winner of the tournament will go on to represent AAU in the New Era Youth Baseball Tournament. This is the “Champion of Champions” event. One team from each national youth organization – AAU, AABC, Babe Ruth League, Dixie, NABF, PONY, SuperSeries, and USSSA – will battle it out to claim rights to a true national crown. The team that wins the AAU 12U National Championship will receive travel to, and lodging at, the New Era Tournament in Memphis, Tennessee.

The 10U, 11U, and 13U AAU National Championships will take place June 26 – July 1. As with the 12U, the 10U champion will represent AAU in the New Era tournament in Memphis, with their air travel and lodging also paid.

Heading south from Orlando about two hours in Sarasota, Florida on the coast will be the AAU 14U National Championships. This tournament is scheduled for July 24-30, and will be held at the spring training site for the Baltimore Orioles. The Nationals at Sarasota are renowned for the hospitality of the host.

Then up the coast about an hour and a half from Orlando is Cocoa Beach/Viera, Florida where the AAU Baseball 15U, 16U, and 18/19U Championships will be held July 25 – 30. Viera is the home of spring training for the Washington Nationals. It would be a difficult task to locate finer fields for a National Championship to be played on.

For the Championships at all age levels, AAU will be changing to a 7-game guarantee for 2010, and the tournament entry fee is only $695. Teams will be placed in pools of four for the first round of three pool-play games. This round will allow us to group the teams into similar skill levels. First- and second-place in each pool will advance to the Diamond bracket. Third- and fourth-place in each pool will earn a berth in the Gold bracket. Teams will again be placed in pools of four for their bracket. The second round of pool play will determine their seeding for single-elimination bracket play.

The 13's are 60/90 and has generated the most interest and will probably fill up first.

As far as last year, there were some problems because the format drastically changed to cut down on the length of the tournament from the past. All of the published formats and rules did not get changed which further caused some confusion and everyone involved did not fully understand the new format. AAU has been very good about reviewing their tournaments and making changes to try and create a better experience.

For you 14 and 15 year old teams, there is a showcase event going on at Disney that is by invitation only. It is getting great response and will fill up early.

Check it out here:

looks like they are trying to fix a royal screw up with format last year where a 1-3 team at 11U advanced ahead of a 2-2 team... I understand their was a major screw up at 10U as well.

Looks like they will also get the part right about every team will play every team in their pool. Rules specifically stated that a round robin would be played at ALL AAU National Championships and the touramenent director and national governing body did not seem to concerned about adherence to the rules at their main event.

Maybe this year they can actually tell the coaches when their team will play before 6PM on Friday for an 8:00 am start on Saturday with an opening ceremony that lasts till 8:30-9:00 on Friday evening. (making it tough to get kids fed and home to rest before 11:00 when they have to be up for first round game at 6:00....

I'm not whinin or anything.... I just saying glad it appears they fixed these things. Maybe they were listening after all....

The 13U plays 60/90, correct, Stan?

That is a great way to end a season, playing that distance. Most teams are trying to transition their players to the big field by that time of the season anyway.
