Guys, Since it is getting too cold to play baseball Papa has been forced to attend some Middle School Wrestling matches, a really good middle school basketball game and today I will be attending the championship game of the Scenic City League being held in Finley Stadium home of the UTC Mocs. (This will be another topic in itself.)

Papa wrestled back in the day before headgears and mouthpieces and I don't remember if we had a mat or not but I am thinking we did. Papa still carries a cauliflower ear from that experience and will tell you that he was quite the little wrestler in his day. My grandson has about a week of wrestling in now and is beginning to wish that he had a little more experience but Papa thinks he will do just fine. I was impressed with the skill level of these middle school kids but seen some that had so much energy that it forced them into mistakes and got them into trouble. It might take me a while to get to my point but I want you to understand my question. In the basketball game that I was attending for my adopted grandson that plays with the Bandits he did not start but when he got his chance changed the entire way the game was being played up to that point. His energy level was off the charts and I watched some of the older players look at this 6th grader that was playing 8th grade ball and decide that they would step their game up. He was everywhere, his arms flailing and feet flying to the ball and this energy completly took over his team that proceeded to make a comeback and win the game 42-41. Now he didn't win the game by himself but it was his energy that kick started the rest of the players and they looked like a different team when he entered the game.

Now to my question. Is there ever too much energy in a sports event. When if ever should this energy be stifled, curtailed, or calmed down.
Just this weekend I saw the high energy level help and I also saw the uncontrolled energy hurt. Have we got any ideas on how to get them to the right level. I think each sport differs and I will tell you now that Papa loves the energy and thinks that playing with heart and energy will win more games than it ever loses. The wrestler for example should keep his energy but learn when to explode and when to wait to ignite that explosion.

How much is too much?

Papa - I didn't know you were a wrestler back in the day. We are kindred spirits. Wrestling creates a special family and bond for life. Those on the outside looking in can't relate but if you've ever wrestled, you know what I'm saying ! I received a report that #1 grandson won his first match and needless to say we were really excited for him. It's amazing what wrestling has done for my son's strength and coordination. I know #1 grandson will see some benefits when he hits the diamond again after wrestling season. Hope to see you at some tournaments where we can get together and tell some "fish stories" about the kids !!!!
