We are trying to start a 7u travel team in Paulding County. We are just tired of Rec ball. We are running into a few problems that I would like some advice on:

-League- we are trying to find a league to play our 7u team in the Spring. Is there such a league anywhere around Paulding County?

-Teams - It seems there are a shortage of 7u travel teams out there. This is why we need a league to play in. We are not opposed to playing up in 8u.

-Parks - There are a shortage of parks from which to practice.

Any information or advice on this is greatly appreciated. Also, if you have a child or know of a 7 year old who might be tired of rec ball who is adequately skilled, feel free to recommend them. Thanks!

AGGL: It's good that you are thinking out of the box even at this age. The better competition that you put them in front of the better they will get. I don't guarantee much but I will guarantee that. Finding the teams to play might be your biggest obstacle but if you can find the teams to play then go for it. Good Luck.

We did our 1st tourney in 6U after getting eliminated in the T-Ball All-stars, and won the darned thing down in Zebulon. It was like a drug, and we were all instantly hooked. We returned to Rec the following Spring, then come Summer, hit the tourney circuit hard as the North Georgia Dawgs as 7U's playing mostly Coach pitch. That's when we first encountered the Boynton Bandits, which inspired us all to work harder. We returned to Rec again for 8U for Spring, then opted out of all stars to hit the road as the North GA Knights playing all Coach pitch. Most of us never returned to Rec after that Summer, and became full time travelers at 9u (all kid pitch).

Never too early to travel, but you wont find many tourneys at 7u except after school lets out, so do Rec then hit the tourney trail afterwards. You will have to opt out of Rec all-stars and wont make any friends at your home Rec park. They wont let you use their fields after you ditch them for all stars, so find a Church field to practice on. Play as much Coach pitch as long as you can. A lot more fun for all involved, don't rush into kid pitch. Plenty of time for that, and the games slows down to a snails pace with all the walks, and K's. Coach pitch builds defensive skills since the ball is put into play 3 times more often than in kid pitch. At the 7U travel ball level, there are no walks, and very few K's, so the balls constantly flying around the field, and its more fun than a barrel of monkeys for all involved.

If you need some free really sharp uniforms, reach me off line. I've got matching batting helmets and all! used for 23 games, so still in good shape.

AGGL,
My son started playing travel ball at 7. He started playing baseball at 4 and had been playing log enough to get frustrated with some of the players in Rec Ball. He still played Rec ball, but played travel in June and July with other players that actually wanted to play instead of being out there because their parents forced them to be.

Luckily, in Tennessee, there was a sanctioning body that did lots of 7U coach pitch tournament almost every weekend. The kids loved it and learned a lot more than they did in Rec. Not to mention, as a coach, you could start working with players outside of a rec environment and make plans for work in the off-season knowing what your team will be like. I like the idea of having players that seem to have strong interest in the game be around others of the same mindset.

As for finding competition, playing up in 8U may be your best, easiest, solution.

For field availability, keep in mind, at that age, you only really need a flat spot of ground. They need so much fundamental work that even places like a parking lot can work. You just have to be creative.

Good luck with this.

I agree that 7u is too young but I also agree that 8yo rec ball is as boring as it can be. All-stars is much better but you have to endure the entire rec league season to get there.

Basically you will find that 7U is too young. You will not find ample 7U travel tournaments throughout the year. Your best best is to enjoy another year of rec ball and play all starts in the summer. The reason for this is the best competition will be doing the same thing and the 7U all star tournaments are a blast each summer. If you are admiment that you must play travel at 7 you will probably have to play them up in 8U to find any tournaments or even teams to play. On a side note the above reference is the same for 8U. Too young for travel. IMHO

I can't believe a 7 YO has been playing long enough to be "tired of rec ball".
