TAKING A POLL:
How many players on your travel team had to sit out(not throw) for more than 2 weeks of baseball due to arm trouble?

We had 3. All pitchers

12U team--> Two of our top pitchers missed significant time, probably 10 games each. They both threw breaking balls, but not that many. Neither one had excessive innings and it was early in the season so their pitching coach was limiting them to 35-40 pitches per outing.

They're both fine now.

Our age was 13U advancing to 14U now. Few Aches and pains but no extended sit outs that I can think of.

I believe it was an hour lesson with most of the time geared toward catching instruction.

I think 0 is a pipe dream. There are some kids out there who I have seen not be able to throw for several weeks or even months who are not even pitchers. Some kids may just be made up differently and be prone to injury regardless of what we do. That's not to say we don't do the responsible thing and watch for fatigue and encourage shoulder strengthening excersizes, but it's not always the coaches fault when a kid hurts his arm.

12 out of 19. That's less than 1 per team. Zero is our goal, and it seems like most of us striving for it quite well. The tams that have 2 or 3 needs to take some more precautionary steps, but I will say 12 seems to be more of a challenge physiologically.

It doesnt matter if they throw one pitch or seven innings in one day,and have the best mechanics, if their between 12 and 15 (growing fast),they are subject to have a growth plate type injury.now the percentage does increase drasticaly for poor mechanics and overuse of the arm. To those who are reporting 0 injuries in this age group means two things, Coaches are properly conditioning their atheletes, both on the practice fields and prior to games, and luck!

We had 0 arm problems on the 11u Bullets ,we haven't had any since we started travel at 9u . We start in Dec. with light throwing and work our way up each week and by March we are ready but still put everyone on a pitch count.

10U Bandits had the big lefty that was supposed to not throw for 4 weeks but we have taken him out for the winter to be sure that his arm is completely healed.

We had 2 on our team (12u). Both were pitchers but almost every kid on the team is a pitcher. They were out pretty much the whole year.

11u team. We had 2. One of them got a lesson on playing catcher and after that lesson (40+ throws to 2nd base) he was done for the season.
thirdbase Posted - 08/06/2009 : 16:13:49
let me guess all of them are either 12,13,or 14?
bmoser Posted - 08/06/2009 : 14:31:49
