This question is more for the umps, but anybody feel free to chime in with their own experiences. Does anyone know the rule regarding noise made by players in the dugout for high school and/or travel games?
I was at a high school game two weeks ago and one team was off the walls hype, and the other coach complained and the blue told the visiting dugout to quiet down.
Is there a specific rule to address this, or more of the courtesy of baseball type understanding?

It's Busch League to me.... There's a big difference between cheering on your teammates vs. trying to distract or intimidate or whatever the opponent. I've seen coaches, parents, and players doing it, and just SMH. |

When my son was 13, he was a pitching against a team that used all these tactics. They would even call time just as he was coming set. It started to eg to him. Then the short stop walked over said something in his year and he pitched lights out the rest of the outing. Later I asked him what the short shop said. His response: Scoreboard :-) |

Actually, not true. Son's team beat every one of the teams that was overly chippy in their dugout. Even when that team was down double digits. It doesn't "bother" him or his team, it just leads to an attitude they have about that school that they're a bunch of tools. They have come to know and expect that this is just how they'll be. One of these exact same teams in our region, that was chirping the entire game, actually had a player give the throat slash sign to our catcher when they scored their first run in the 5th inning of what was (at that time) a 9-1 game. We run ruled them the next inning. Chirping never slowed.
In HS, you tend to see the same teams, year in and year out doing the same things. It is a cultural thing and a direct reflection on the coach and staff. Players will do what is allowed and encouraged. Likewise, so will parents. If a coach allows parents to chirp and chip at umpires, they will.
Coaches have complete control over this behavior. I place it on them, not the players. MOST adolescents will act out as much as is allowed by their coach. |

Glad to see someone bringing this up. Have witnessed numerous times where a team is just screaming out of the dugout, and banging on buckets at the opposing pitcher with the coach actually encouraging it. Umps and tournament directors will do nothing about it.
Had no idea there may actually be a rule against this, it shouldn't happen in the first place as it is horrible sportsmanship and really has no place in baseball. Seems to be diminishing as the kids get older but we do still see this. And it is not confined to any level of teams, AA to Major teams have all be guilty. |

The only rules I'm aware of are no artificial noisemakers and that players aren't allowed to make specific noises when the pitcher is delivering his pitch or to a batter when the pitch is being delivered. What I mean by that is that they can't let out a shriek right at that moment immediately before, during or after. They can let off a constant shriek during if they want, just not something that is deliberate to that moment.
If the kids are going nuts as you describe above, then yeah, umps may intervene and tell them to chill out, especially if they heighten it around pitch delivery.
As for noisemakers, the only time I've seen umps get involved was to stop a team from using sticks on ball buckets as drums during a game. Seriously, the kid was like Buddy Rich (actually very good, we suspected that he was a band kid on varsity that did nothing but drum every game). Great rhythm. Drummed until the ump make him stop. |
