Hurricane, that comes back to a health issue. If the coach designates someone to do it I have no problem not doing it. But considering high school games are not likely to be played during 90*F days it shouldn't be an issue. |

No it's a 100% CONTROL thing!
That's the glitch between us, you want to know "What is the reason for not having facial hair" and I don't care what the reason is, coach said it, coach IS IN FACT IN CONTROL, therefore follow the rules or don't play for him would be my advice to my son.
I am glad you give a baseball coach CONTROL over your son. Please keep the board updated on your journey and I wish you the best.

Posted - 03/16/2016 : 21:36:02 Geeez... This topic has been beaten into the ground. Everyone above you in life will always have their specific rules to follow. As far as it being a baseball coach... You either act to like it, abide by his rules and play for his TEAM (everyone buying in) or you don't like it and quit, wandering what it could've been like to form a bond with a TEAM of brothers for 4 years that will leave you with lifelong memories! I know, run-on sentence... Off to get my son some shaving cream. End of discussion for me! Good luck and health to all our boys this year, |

Posted - 03/16/2016 : 11:59:23 When my son was a HS freshman, he attended a private high school where the school policy was no facial hair and no hair below the collar. The end of year banquet was held after the seniors had graduated. Everyone of them came to the banquet with a week's worth of facial hair. They loved the coach and followed the rules. But as soon as they had a choice, everyone of them stopped shaving. I assume most shaved in the following weeks to please their next baseball coach :-) |

What if the coach decided to pitch your son with a hurt arm, is that okay because he is in charge?
743, while I find your posts amusing you do go off on tangents that are absurd. The health of a player is never open to debate with a coach. However, if a parent has an absurd "safety" rule like a kid can only pitch 35 pitches per week then it is up to the coach if he wants to keep that kid.
Conversely, if the coach asks a player to play in a tutu with lipstick on then it is up to the player if THEY want to play on that guys team. That's it, end of discussion. This is what you have to do to play, are you in or out?
If you think it is unfair that a coach can have facial hair but wants his team to NOT have facial hair then the duck dynasty look alike can go play on a travel team somewhere and not his high school team.
I am glad my posts amuse you and get you writing and thinkings, (that's what the board is for), in 4 or 5 years, I can't wait to see and read your thoughts about high school baseball.
This isn't the first time I have heard that my thoughts on high school will change...but in my naivety I can't see how they will. My family includes a long line of military and police, rules are rules and orders are orders.
When my son was 6 I told him if I EVER saw him throw a bat or helmet or cry out of anger I would remove him from the field, he hasn't. When my kid struck out at age 8 I didn't blame the umpire I told my kid that he already saw two balls called strikes and he should have adapted because in that box it was the umpires rules and there wasn't anything he could do but adapt.
I have never talked to a coach about my son's position on the field or in the batting order. I have seen daddy ball, and hot momma ball at it's best, was it "unfair", yes, did I say anything, no. If my son makes his high school team only to sit on the bench it will be up to him to change that, not me.
I am very serious when I say that my job is to drive the car and write the checks, the rest is up to him and his main job is to say "Yes sir, whatever you need." He was recently asked by the high school coach, who saw him at batting practice, what position he played, his response was "Wherever you need me to play Sir." I don't know how my opinions could change in 4 or 5 years because as I said, orders are orders, but I guess we will see.

Health is different than policy. Come on now 743, be reasonable...
And what in the world happened in your life that brings on this attitude about a coach having the same rule for himself as he does for the team? Were you on a team where the coach wouldn't let you grow your 'stache, but he had one? Did you hate the guy? I don't get it...
Let's say the coach had no facial hair. Is it ok with you if he institutes a no facial hair policy? Personally, if a coach of my son's had facial hair, but wouldn't let the kids have it, I wouldn't really care. I'd tell my son to go shave. But, that's just me. It's really not that big of a deal. |

And why is that?
In the 1960's if Bill Walton had gone home and told his parents that Coach Wooden wasn't going to let him play unless he cut his hair short and shaved his face clean, his dad would have taken him by the ear and drug him to the nearest barber chair. Walton knew this so he hopped on his bike and took himself. When the kid comes home today with the same dilemma, parents seek validation on message boards asking is the coach has the "right" to hold little Johnny to his "senseless" rules.
Times have changed and we only need look in a mirror to see why.
Our kids are growing up in a generation where EVERYONE has an opinion because they think the internet at their fingertips makes them experts. I didn't hear anything growing up about parents opting out of vaccinating their kids and yet it's rampant today.
I was thrilled to see a sign at the pediatricians office that said "As of 1/1/16 we choose to no longer care for patients that are not properly vaccinated." I took that to mean, "Fine, if our medical degrees aren't enough to convince you to vaccinate your kid because you know better then you feel free to go elsewhere"....love that place! |

He certainly would be able to "get away" with that today... There are plenty of coaches out there who have no facial hair policies. There's clearly nothing wrong with that. in_the_know is right, it starts at home. |

And some folks might think that that is what is wrong with our society these days.........Many Kids think everything should be given to them for free and on a Silver high tech platter. Some old school respect, discipline and responsibility could go along way. Unfortunately, we have drifted far from those days |

Agreed! My parents made it simple...respect authority!
My philosophy is the same with my kids...and if they decide not to follow the rules there will be swift and decisive consequences to correct that behavior. |
