USSSA, Grand Slam, AAU, Triple Crown, USTBA, Nations, others? Grading system: A,B,C,D,F

We played 100% USSSA this year, so have no basis for comparison. I'd like to see how you all grade them.

USTBA – A+ Good experiences and well run tournaments.

Thank you for the high rating and kind compliments, although, as National and Georgia Director, I feel we have plenty of room for improvement. For those of you that know me personally, you know that I have and will always do anything within my power to make USTBA events the best possible experience for the players, coaches, parents and all spectators that attend.

2010 will bring many enhancements for USTBA. Hopefully you will notice these positive changes as USTBA is restructuring many aspects of the organization. I beleive these changes will compliment our tournament events and make your involvement even better for 2010 (starting this fall) and beyond.

In the next few days there will be a coaches form available on the Georgia website which will allow you to rate different aspects of the organization with a response section for you to tell us your thoughts, suggested improvements and of course, any positive statements you might want to share. I invite each coach to take a few minutes to complete this online form @ Georgia USTBA. Your input is valued and important to me and the organization.

Myself and the the entire USTBA staff thank you for your continued support and involvement of USTBA events and we look forward to hosting your team and families for many years to come. If you haven't had the opportunity to join us, I would like to personally invite you to come and experience USTBA and become a growing member of our baseball family.

***PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING WEBSITE ADDRESS CHANGES***

The website changes will take effect Friday July 17, 2009. The new websites will be more dynamic, easier to navigate and make registering and participating in events easier.

Wishing you all the best,

To all coaches, parents, and fans of the game:

On behalf of Triple Crown Sports and the VonDolteren family, we very much appreciate all of the kind words on this topic. We try and do our very best to promote a quality product and take pride in doing the little things right so that our customer continues playing in our premium events. We hosted over 600 teams in the 2009 spring season and it was becoming increasingly difficult to accomodate everyone all while making it an enjoyable experience.

I know there are several things that we must do to improve and we take constructive criticism very well. We try to not start games so early, but it has to be done in order to complete the tournament at a decent hour so that the kids are prepared for school on Monday morning. We have come up with some ideas to try and do a ranking system, but it gets to be very difficult when you have some many clubs wanting to participate. I will always have an open ear and listen to your concerns in order to improve our product.

We once again thank all of the teams for their continued support of Triple Crown Baseball in Georgia. We will be back at it this fall season (starting in Septemeber) and rolling into another successful 2010 spring campaign.

Take care and get some rest and relaxation.

Tony VonDolteren

Please tell Tony and the the whole organization to drop 8am games and start at 9am. That's the only beef with TC. STOP 8 am games! Otherwise, no complaints. They do a good job. Did I say 8 am games suck?

Speaking from a 11U playing experience this past year….here is my2cents from a parent/team coordinator:

USTBA – A+ Good experiences and well run tournaments. Prompt responses from the tournament directors and web updates on which teams are coming and scores once the tournament begins. Seem to have trouble attracting the top tier teams in the 11U group so far but hope that changes next year.[p]

USSSA –A - As stated, can be hit or miss depending on the tournament director/host for the tournament. Web site can be a little confusing at times but I like the ranking system to at least give you a starting point on pool play scheduling. [p]

Triple Crown – B+ - Usually run well and great communication. Web site can be a little tricky and many times can be a little hard to find what teams are playing especially when hosted at East Cobb. (The East Cobb website really needs to address this in the future for all their tournaments.) Generally seems to attract the best teams for the most competitive baseball. [p]

AAU – C - Most disappointed with these tournaments. Confusing web site and finding results for tournaments hard at times. Tournaments sometimes seem to have young adults in charge, not always a bad thing but sometimes caused a bit of a problem on rule interpretations and base path distances. Disney World Series was a major disappointment. Promised 28 teams dropped to 16 teams by opening ceremonies. Umpiring and game control were issues throughout the week. [p]

Nations – Didn’t get a chance to play in any of those. Looks like they are working to make it big. Didn’t see many top teams joining their tournaments yet. Had some really cheap tournament fees.[p]

SYSA – A new comer that caters to the AAA and AA teams. Has some good parks and usually well run. Web sites are not updated very well and communication is a little slow at times.[p]

BPA – also caters to more AAA and AA teams. Web site worthless and finding out who’s coming is impossible.

How have you enjoyed Grand Slam World Series in Panama City in years past? Not much talk about the Grand Slam org.

I like the location (beach) better than Orlando, or some of the other usssa sites.

Thx for the replies. We're trying to learn more about what else is out there besides usssa.

For the WS they have a "rain day", so it will have to really rain before they start adjusting the scheduling. There were some delays yesterday, but I think they got everything in.

Great fields. Usually a range from AA to Major.

From my limited experience (4 tournaments) they have decent times and do a good job with the pairings.

Good job updating the Web Site and at the WS bracket play starts the day after pool play ends, so you're not sitting there trying to figure out when you play.

Available and accessible personnel.

My only gripe is that the umpiring hasn't been as good as other places. Probably 5 of the worst calls I've seen in the last 4 years have come in GS games. Not all of them against us. Could be just coincidence, but they were some really bad calls.

I would put them a notch below TC, but above USSSA.

I agree Triple Crown runs a great tourny. I think there is one area they could address. The transition from pool to brackets on Saturday afternoon is very hair raising. Many times you need to hustle to fields to make the first round of brackets. An hour or two gap would be helpful.

Great Competition & well run though

How about adding the category - Ability to adjust schedules for weather delays?

you would have to grade USSSA differently since it has many "directors" whose companies promote USSSA tournaments. Some of these directors are absolutely horrible....poor communication skills, cancelling tournaments without notification to the teams etc. Others are fantastic. So there needs to be clarification.

Triple Crown seems to be hitting on all cylinders right now. My son's team played in 4 of their tournaments and they were all well run and, if you took advantage of the discounts, reasonably priced. Great tee shirts, too. However, they were a little over their heads in a couple of the fields, mostly due to late sign ups. A

Every time they have played in a Grand Slam event (LaGrange, Panama City) they've run into really bad umpiring. Everything else has been good. B

They didn't bother with USSSA this year and as long as that organization remains as unresponsive and uncommunicative as they were this year, that won't change. D

Don't know about the others, though USTBA seems to be doing a pretty good job. I

Hey bmoser,
We played in USSSA, Triple Crown, Nations, USTBA, and the AAU Nationals in Florida.
USSSA-(B-)- We only played a couple events, but it seems that the organization of the tournament is totally up to the park specific organizers. No real beefs here except score reporting. ECB had a very oraganized event. It was a pain trying to get around to all the fields for the Super NIT, but enjoyed playing the best of the best.

Triple Crown-(A)- Tony and his bunch put on a great tournament. A few people on this site have spoken on the how pools are determined. In your initial TC event, you may draw a tough pool, but after that, it seems they do a good job of spreading the better teams out. Highly organized and Tony is a solid communicator. The varying gate fees at different locations were an issue, but it seems Tony is on top of it.

Nations-(A)- Only played in one of their events in Winder, but it was a great experience. Other organizations need to be on the look out as Nations is expanding to south of the airport and to the NW burbs. The director in Winder, Shannon Ivey, was amazing. He was doing it all, even working the concession stand and making a point to talk to all coaches. The tournaments are priced well, great points and strength system. Website updated almost to the minute, as well as offering Cooperstown bids for tournament winners. If the other directors are as responsive and cordial as Shannon, Nations will become one of the top tournament organizations next year.

USTBA-(B)- Played in a couple of these events and looking to play in there Eastern Nationals. Need a better way to figure out pool play system, but this organization puts on a great show for the boys. I think they will be better next year, by having the results of this years tournaments, but they provide opportunities for the kids to bring home some hardware at all levels. Website updating needs to improve and we experienced a few surly umpires and confusion on base path length for our age group (happened in two seperate tournaments). Definitely an up and coming organization.

AAU-(?)- No state tournament due to lack of interest. Our experience in Orlando was not the best and feedback from Florida teams is that AAU is losing market share in Florida, as a lot of those teams are turning to USSSA. It became evident that rules were left open for interpretation by tournament directors. The surroundings of Orlando provided a great experience for the boys, but in MY OPINION, AAU was looking to make as much money as possible and not contribute to the baseball experience for the boys that you get from TC, Nations, or USTBA.

Over the last two years we have competed in USSSA, Grandslam and Triple Crown. FWIW here is my opinion:

Triple Crown - Tony runs great tournaments. Usually at very good facilities and he consistently updates his web sites. You also have the opportunity to play a mixed level of competition from AAA to top level major teams. I highly recomend Triple Crown tournaments.
USSSA - The tournament totally depends on who is running. My experience has been both good and bad with USSSA.
Grandslam - We played a couple Grandslam tournaments at Lagrange and have had very good experiences. If the location was closer we would have probably played more.
