An interesting prediciment occurs this next season. Some players will be rising 9th graders, while others will be rising 8th graders. Many of the rising 9th graders will make their HS freshman or JV teams. That will keep them from playing travel ball until May, while the rising 8th graders will need to start earlier.
How are teams planning to handle this? It seems that there is a higher number of rising 9th graders this year in the rising 14U group than last year. Maybe because it is the first age group that was strongly affected by the birhtdate change to May 1st.
Just curious how teams will deal with this? |

Middle school is fun because kids get to become friends with classmates instead of kids who they barely know but as most will see middle school is usually 17 kids who resemble a rec league team and coaches who are better at teaching math than baseball.

I think you almost get to a point of "Too many irons in the fire."
Most serious teams won't want a player playing on their team and a feeder team too. You almost have to pick one or the other. If you pick the feeder team, you could always pick up with a travel team needing a player, when the feeder team is off. |

Always pick the team with the better coach. High School coaches who hold players hostage are generally idiots. You do not the high school team, they need your money. Do not play for a coach who does not care about your kids arms (innings/pitch counts/etc.), if the head varsity coach is willing to sit a better player because they weren't there for the summer, they won't be around for very long.
Never for a moment feel the pressure of the High School coach. |

How many 14U coaches are willing to have kids miss because of feeder teams? Then you also run into the problem of working out with the High School team in the month of June. The feeder team thing seems to be gathering some momentum as more schools are supporting this. My son wants to do both but also would love to go to Omaha or some other trip in travel ball. Whaddya do? |

I am told that they will take that into account as they build their teams, so I would say yes, definitely. |

My son is a rising 9th grader who turned 14 this month, so he can play 14U in the fall/spring. He played on a AAA 14U team this year.
So the question is do you go to 14U tryouts and let the coaches know that you will likely be skipping February through April due to JV ball? |

I was a coach on a 14u team last year. What we did was start our tournament late - around end of March with the kids we had available. We had a couple of kids that played for both their middle school team and our team. Generally did not conflict as we played weekend tournaments and middle school played during the week. We also had two or three kids who played HS ball. They just did not play until the HS season ended. |

The Dunwoody 14U travel team will not practice or play together from mid-February to mid-April to allow players to play for their middle school team or JV team. They will probably play a light schedule in the fall, some competition in February and then hit it hard in May, June and July. We're holding tryouts in August for a 14U and a 13U team. |

Doc - I was going to post a very similar (if not exacting) question so thank you. My son is a rising 14U that will be going into the 8th grade so this question holds alot of weight for us as we would like to get an earlier start if possible. Our 2009 team had quite a few rising to 8th but certainly some heading to the 9th. I look forward to hearing comments here and hope the coaches use this thread to explain how they will handle your posed question? Tks again Doc - great post! |
