We are at that point in the 6, 7, and 8U season where we can no longer free substitute players and bat all 12 or so that we carry on the team. My experience with this is that you end up making someone mad and making a player feel like they are less important to the team because they sit the bench. As coaches, we try and sit as many of them equally but you also have the goal of doing the best you can and the math always works to where the same kids seem to be on the bench. We carry 12 players as most teams do so that means 2 sit out every game. Prior to Districts, all the tournaments allow free substitution and continuous batting order. This allows with 12 players every player to sit one inning per game when you play a full 6. Everyone bats so atleast they stay involved and you can bring kids in and out from inning to inning. What does everyone think of this rule? I feel it is a good rule when you get into kid pitch but when you are doing coach pitch, I think everyone should play and the rules are too restrictive for 6, 7, and 8 year olds (and their parents) to understand. Thoughts?

This is the very reason I never recommended any team 10 or under carry more than 10 players (9 position and 1 EH). That way you are never in a situation where someone cannot be in the lineup.

Maybe with Dizzy Dean you have to carry 12 (or the league makes you carry that many) but if I did not have to, I would not, for the very issue you are bringing up.

As has been mentioned, someone won't be happy.

At every level even in travel up until 13 all kids on a roster should bat. Pool play bracket it doesnt matter, Its all about development not winning atleast it should be.

I say dizzy dean is behind a little on this after all they are a rec. organization. I vote let everybody hit. It is not real baseball in dizzy dean until 11 so anything before that I say let them hit. If your coaching it stinks having to all of a sudden sit kids.

The longer we've been away from it (4 years now), the crazier Dizzy Dean looks. I think it's too restrictive. Shoot, you can do continuous batting in most travel tournaments at 11, 12 and 13. There is a risk, so my son's team does it in pool play, but not in bracket play.

Let the kids play.
