Swing the bat with a purpose: We have to Focus

Whether you are in mom's living room, at the cages, in your buddy's backyard playing wiffle-ball, or swinging an invisible bat while waiting for a movie - swing the bat with a purpose.

Visualize making clean contact and driving the ball to whichever gap you choose (Rinse & Repeat).

A buddy of mine told me an Ichiro spring training story. He said that Ichiro was taking swings off the tee (hours before they were scheduled to arrive). He noticed that Ichiro was working on driving the ball to the opposite field. He also noticed that Ichiro was hitting the ball in the same general area with each swing.

Well he asked Ichiro what he was focusing on during this drill. My buddy was expecting a general answer along the lines of, "I'm just trying to stay to the left of the second base bag..." To his amazement, Ichiro stopped, walked my buddy over to a section of netting in the tunnel and pointed to a Silver Dollar sized area of the netting.

Ichiro was so precise (not perfect) that he was laser focused and locked in on a Silver Dollar sized region in the cage. He didn't hit the spot every time; that's not the point. The point is that he stepped into that cage with an absolute plan and he worked his plan to exhaustion.

Players, it's great to have fun, but it's also imperative that you approach your drills with game level intensity. Don't waste swings. Don't waste energy. Listen to your coaches. Talk to your parents about coming up with a plan. You have to do extra in order to be better than average.

When I was younger, I would take a minimum of 250 dry swings with a wood bat every night (outside). I would often stand beneath the streetlight and this would allow me to see my shadow while swinging.

Do you want this guys? Do you want to be the "best player that you can be?" Well let's put in a little extra work, but we must have laser focus for ten to fifteen minutes (tough to extend our focus any longer than that, especially without a coach around - our attention spans are very short).

Keep up the great work guys!
