3sondad-I got chills just reading your post, seeing a hitter live being at the park is something you can't get from watching it on tv or hearing on the radio. Tony Gwynn has to be my all time favorite hitter. Rod Carew before Gwynn came around.

Best hitter I ever played with was a guy named Adam Brown from Monroe GA, set the JUCO homerun record, guy was 3 for 3 with 3 homeruns against Ga Tech and Clemson going deeep in left field, center field and right field, if you have ever been to Ga Techs field he cleared the fence and big green wall in right field and it hit in the top of a tree in a fraternity house across the street, the whole place went silent,Jim Morris coach at Tech walked over and offered him a full ride in the dugout during the game. Signed with the Dodgers and made it to AAA but never any higher, lead the league in batting averages a couple of years. Guy was amazing!

Of active players I'd say Evan Longoria

Albert Pujols, have you seen how fast his hands are. Hitting at least .330 every with 35 homeruns.

George Brett

Will Clark

Chipper Jones has a pretty good swing that has served him pretty well.

Fat Bob had an amazing swing, short, compact, powerful. But the most amazing hitters are great switch hitters. Mantle, Chipper, Eddie Murray. We all know how hard it is to hit a baseball, imagine how hard from both sides of the plate.

Current - Chipper Jones - he dares you to get near the plate and has only become a better hitter with age

Past - Tony Gwynn (the best i saw live)

Lance Berkman and John Olerud. Smooth, effortless, lots of pop.

Ken Griffey over Horner... But Horner had that 2 cent head to work with.

Among active players ... Albert Pujols, Todd Helton, Ichiro, Vladimir Guerrero, Derek Jeter have the highest Lifetime batting averages.
How could you go wrong with any of these guys???

Others that I have been fortunate enough to see play ... Tony Gwinn, Kirby Puckett, Roberto Clemente, and Rod Carew are in the top 40 of all time... I was in 3rd grade when Clemente was killed in a plane crash, but I still remember watching him at that young an age and being amazed by his abilities. Growing up in Atlanta back in the 70's we only got to see the American League play on NBC usually one or two Saturdays a month and then the playoffs in October. But of course, we missed a lot of playoff games, because they were played during school hours. Anyway, IMO Rod Carew always stood above others when I was fortunate to see him play. In 1977 TWIB, shown in Atlanta before the NBC baseball game of the week, was a great opportunity for us to see the "great's" highlights. My how technology has changes... I now can listen to any MLB game, get game summaries, stats, box score, and watch video highlights on my phone while the games are being played.

I would have loved to seen any of the old time greats play this game. Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Joe Jackson, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Stan Musial, etc... I have no idea how you could even judge which of those swings were the best.

Bonds was a .288 lifetime hitter until he reached 36 years old ... He raised his lifetime average to just over .300 the next five years by averaging .339. The final 'roids years saw his average go down to .298... He was a good player, but IMHO not great until the 'roids.

Barry had the ability to take a ball headed for his right knee, strike it well and keep it fair (at least for him). I have never seen anything like it. Can't discount the clear and the cream! The year he hit 73 he also led the league in walks...amazing! By the way Maris in 61' had no intentional walks. No one wants to pitch to the Mick. The best right handed hitter I have seen in my lifetime are Nomar and Bad Albert P. From the left side would be Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn. Alltime right side Joltin Joe. Lefty Teddy Ballgame.
Don't fall in love with the lefty swing. It will always look better bacause their follow through carries them to first! If the game were reversed we might immediatelly think of more right handed hitters as being smooth and having a great swing. By the way I was a switch hitter, from the left side it always looked better. Great topic!

Barry Bonds - 'Roids or not. He has a great swing and doesn't swing at pitches he doesn't like.
