I really think that one of the hardest jobs for a youth travel baseball team Coach is that of deciding what pitcher to pitch and when. It is like a game of chess or in Papa's world checkers. You have got to plan for 2-3 moves or games down the road and be able to adjust when your opponent throws you a curve.

Tough job but the Bandits has the best mind in the business on their side. Coach Troy has one of the most sophisticated systems in the youth baseball world.

If you watch prior to each game and you see him in the middle of the huddle he is going Eeenie, Meenie, Miny, Moe, Catch this pitcher by the toe and that is who you get. Laugh if you want but we have 42 wins and one defeat with this system.

Congrats to the Bandits again. I'm not sure how they don't even play poorly.

One area of improvement for USTBA is to look at their pitching rules for 3-day tournaments. There is a definite advantage to for the teams that play games on Friday versus teams that play all of their pool play games on Saturday.

The rule for pitching is 7 innings over 2 days with an inning counting as an appearance. For teams that play on Friday, they can pitch their ace pitcher and still have them for 7 full innings on Sunday. In 10u in the Ultimate bracket, the Outlaws, Grip & Bulldogs played on Friday night and had their full compliment of those pitchers for Sunday bracket play, while other teams did not (Dodgers, Bandits, Wildcats). So these teams could pitch their ace for 4-5 innings on Fri and again for 4-5 innings on Sunday.

I like the 7 inning total, but would prefer to see this for the entire tournament vs over 2 days to even out this advantage. Just my 2 cents.

Papa hadn't seen the Bulldogs until this week but I did get to watch them and I think they deserved 3rd place as they seem to be solid with decent pitching, hitting, and defense. The end of this year will be a lot of fun for Georgia Baseball because they are so many teams capable of winning it all each weekend.

This one was pretty easy to call.

Those were the easy picks. Did anyone have the Bulldogs for third?
baseballpapa Posted - 06/01/2009 : 14:49:53
Hurricane: I wish it was as easy as you make it sound but truth is that it gets harder and harder. I really want everyone to know how much most of the 10 year old teams have improved. It is not easy at all to do what the Bandits have done especially with 9 players. The competition we will face this week will be the best so far this year and we will need the ball to bounce the right way or we could be in trouble.

TAZ980002 Posted - 06/01/2009 : 14:22:57
Congratulations to the Bandits. They are truly in a class by themselves. Pitching, team speed, baserunning, ability to get on base, airtight defense and great coaching. We saw a lot of these attributes from many of the teams at this weekend's tournament but only the Bandits possessed all of them.

Sorry we couldn't give you guys more of a battle in the final game.

With that said, we are also very proud of our boys and the way they battled all weekend. The tournament format puts a lot of pressure on the teams to play well in pool. Finishing 2nd in pool and the Ultimate bracket was a great accomplishment for our team. Given a couple more months to gel, I think we could have given the Bandits a better run for their money. There is no substitute for experience in these high level games and the Bandits have plenty of that.

Congrats to Bandits, and way to battle Grip! I wish I could have been there. Nice pick Hurricane.

Bandits win 7-3 in a hard fought victory with great pitching from both pitchers. Knew going in it would be a pitchers duel and it was. If the Bandits had any advantage it was one of experience as they have been in game after game of this magnitude. Moser you would have been proud of your Gwinett boys as they did not go quietly into the night and would not give in until we had the last out and made an impressive run in the top of the 6th that put a real scare into us.

Bandits have now successfully defended one to the State Titles and will begin to quickly get ready for the second. It only gets harder and harder as this week will be filled with even more teams looking to knock us off the top of the mountain.

I can tell you that beating back this type of competition week in and week out is taking its toll on our little guys and it would be nice to take a week off to regroup but I don't think we will have that luxury.

I say hats off to a great Georgia Grip team and thanks to my Bandits for always playing with heart and hustle.

papa - saw the jags today tie the chiefs. I love having underdogitis. Awesome play by the bandits. Looks like the Hurricane may have called the finals with the grip and bandits. I say 6 to 5 in 6, you pick the winner
baseballpapa Posted - 05/30/2009 : 20:11:12
Bandits #1 seed after pool play but there is a lot of baseball yet to be played. Teams are looking strong and the improvement for some of these teams we saw today is obvious. Still anybody's tournament. We will see who shows up tommorrow.

USTBA seeds the Top 6 teams into an Ultimate Bracket, the next 5 in an American Bracket, and the last 5 in a National Bracket.

The teams bracket seeding will be determined the usual way using record, points against, points scored, etc. So, there really aren't "pools" per se. Theoretically you could have 3 teams from one pool and 1 from another in the Ultimate bracket.

Pools are seeded in the State and National USTBA Tournaments by USTBA points earned for that season. In this case, SP Wildcats are #1, Bandits #2, Tigers #3, etc. You can view the points rankings on the USTBA website. SP therefore plays seeds #8, #9, and #16. Bandits play #7, #10, and #15. And so on.

This is our first year playing USTBA and we really like the format. If you want to play in the top Bracket (Ultimate or American depending on the size of the tournament), then you have to win in pool play. But if you are a AA team playing in an Open tournament and don't win any pool games, you still have an chance to perform in bracket play because you're not playing against a top seed in the first round.

Finally, if this is your first USTBA tournament, you're likely to you and your kids are likely to notice a difference. It's a nice experience.

Papa know the Jags and they would hard for us to beat with all of our guys but we will be playing very short handed this week. This will be a real test and I hope our guys reach down deep and give all they have and if they do we will take our chances. The Jags are for real and it would not be the end of the world to lose to this team.
Reggie Posted - 05/28/2009 : 13:26:43
Them Jags are men against boys usually. Playing up and winning will be tough for any team.

I saw the Dodgers at the last TC tournament and at least one of their players was from the Yard Dogs Black team. It looks like they have picked up a few other quality players too.
TAZ980002 Posted - 05/28/2009 : 11:39:32
We have played the Tigers twice, splitting the games. They are very solid in all aspects. A solid Major team for sure. Haven't seen the Bulldogs yet.

Mort - thanks for the info. I love to see the David and Goliath matchups sometimes. It really brings out the best in coaches and teams when they have made up their minds not to knuckle under. i enjoy watching underdogs fight tooth and nail. I have underdogitis sometimes. Should be a great weekend for ball in Georgia. Good luck to all.

The stingrays are there to just have fun. The N.G. Lightning when they all show at the same time they can play with anyone out there.

Pool 4 definitely looks the toughest top-to-bottom. Did I hear that the Dodgers lost a pitcher to the ECB Scorpions? Does anyone know anything about the Georgia Stingrays or N. GA Lightning?
