In light of the Utley pending suspension for his slide into 2B it begs the questions...what are we teaching our players about sliding into 2B with the potential to break up a double play?
What are we teaching our SS and 2B about where to stand during a potential double play?
Are you specifically teaching anything about where to slide or where to stand? |

14u game this weekend, a kid was running to second on an obvious double play ball. The player slid, the second basement fell over the kid and the Umpire ruled that the player intentionally slid into the fielder, rather than the bag. Runner was out at second AND first.
I'll start by saying I dont the rules for our age groups, but so long as the runner is able to access the bag, the pros can take any line they want when sliding into second. It is very common to see someone go in HARD in order to break up a double play, so ANY Kid who has watched a few games on TV already knows this. Its a reaction thing at this age |

So glad someone here ain't skeered to tell the truth................What about sliding into a bag when the defender puts his foot or leg in front of and blocking it? Feet first and make sure you get to the bag.
Honestly B, I haven't seen anyone working on how to slide in order to break up a double play up to this point.
Me neither...is this at the higher level or starting at a particular age group? |

Fielder? Several things....1.)A thrown low ball right at the runner forces an early slide. 2.)Quick on feet, use bag to protect you, footwork to get around to outfield or infield side of bag. 3.) After throw get your feet off ground, slight hop up, as a matter of practice, 4.)When you do get an aggressive break up slide use #3 technique to come back down on runner and walk your metal cleats all over him.
Fair enough?
VERY true. This is what we teach our middle infielders. |
