Coach Mark and greglomax: You are both right and it is obvious from reading your posts that you are in the game for all of the right reasons. It's nice to have someone like Lomax that is ahead of us that will share his experiences, both good and bad with us so that we might avoid some of the pitfalls he has encountered in this thing called travel baseball. I have learned so much in such a short period of time. I would never have believed before I started how fiercely competitive this brand of baseball has become. I would also never have believed that a 10 year old child or a 12 year old child could begin to play the way these kids are playing. I was a good player at 12 but looking back I do not think I could have even made one of these travel teams. I watch the little league world series on TV and then see players each weekend that I think are much better than anything I saw on TV. Someone has to admit that these kids are awesome and have learned much more than most of us would have believed possible.

This is very true Mr.Lomax. My son has made friends with ballplayers from all over the US. He shares the same feelings, desires and goals that many of these boys do. As for me I have made many friends and seeing how there is no guide on making a pro ballplayer many of these dads have helped me to understand alot of how travelball and the do's and don'ts of baseball work. I know he is only 10 but so was every ballplayer at one time and as long as thats his goal we will pursue it.

Coach Mark,
What will be fun to watch over the next couple of years is the relationships the players from the different teams form. Especially in those down times between games where they are playing tag or whiffle ball, or something else, just being kids.

Baseball players start to form a "fraternity" where players from many different teams have that common bond.

It is fun to watch.

West Georgia Bandits did not put up much of a fight but this team has come a long way in a short period of time. Given some more time to develop their pitching this team might become a player in this age group. Believe me when I tell you that our hats are always off to 643 and we believe that they are the real deal. They got the best of everything we had to throw at them and we still was in for the fight of our lives. Scorpions played very well up to the last game and I couldn't tell if they just ran out of pitching or if West Georgia just hit better against them than they did us. Until our hitting gets better it will never be a cakewalk.

Unfortunately I wasn't in town for the sunday games. Papa; did the teams give you a fight or was it a cake walk for the bandits?

You only missed one team in your top 3. You forgot the ECB Scorpions. I'm sure that was an oversight on your part.

Coach Mark: You are absolutely right. At the end of the day after throwing a no-hitter or hitting baseballs all over the field they are still just the average 10 year old kid that is ready for something else to do. After the championship game and we were waiting for the director to present the awards our Bandits introduced the other Bandits to a game with the volleyball that you had to catch and throw before your feet touched the ground. Just another day at the ball park for the Bandits. I hope to meet you at the next tournament as you sound like our kind of guy. Good luck.
CoachMark Posted - 04/07/2009 : 13:46:03
Also agree on the website update. It was slow and it also wasn't always accurate. They could work on this, but that's my only complaint.

With the 3 division format, it's really important to make sure the pool play is divided appropriately. Imagine if the Bandits, 643 & Scorpions were all in the same pool. One goes Ultimate, one American and one National. That could make the tournament unfair for everyone. I'm not sure how USTBA got it right this weekend, but it appeared to work out pretty evenly for everyone in 10U.

I also will say there's a big difference in who's running each USSSA event. The folks in Forsyth do a very good job whereas the guys in Henry have a lot of work to do. But I wouldn't mind seeing the Forsyth Slugfest go USTBA next year. That could be a good match for both.

Papa - my boys played tag with your Bandits on Sat. afternoon at ECB, sliding on the artificial turf. They said they were a lot of fun and very nice. Again, this is my favorite part of travel ball, watching 10 year olds play some awesome baseball on the field and then act like 10 year olds after the game. It reminds me why we do this.

baseballpapa Posted - 04/07/2009 : 11:27:21
I would also say that baseball fans want to know the scores as soon as possible and ask that all websites update sooner.
Hurricane Posted - 04/07/2009 : 09:45:24
I was thinking my only complaint was the updating of websites on USTBA.
bmoser Posted - 04/07/2009 : 07:49:17
USSSA holds lots of tourneys around here whereas TC and USTBA do not...yet. We'll have to see how well these orgs do as they add events (which I hope they'll both do). I'd also like to see these 2 orgs try out some new venues outside the Northwest metro.

USSSA does the best job of updating results on the web, and I happen to think their power rating system is pretty good.

baseballpapa Posted - 04/06/2009 : 19:40:38
I don't disagree with B. Moser much but have to disagree that USSSA is the best we have. In fact I feel that they are the worst we have in Georgia with Triple Crown and USTBA ahead of them and BPA at least level with them. USSSA needs to be more open to teams and Coaches. In any business there is a thing known as professional courtesy and it appears that USSSA does not have this simple thing. B. Moser knows that I don't like predicting but I will predict this. In two years USSSA will be a fringe player in Georgia also.

BASEBALL PAPA:
Yes, I have e-mailed usssa with questions and concerns and some have been answered and some have not. 1 suggestion I made was to have a local council to help them do the 9U, 9AA re-class for 10U. They did a marginal job, and it was clear they did not know the teams. You have to look at results from other orgs tourneys at this age to get a clearer picture of things, or have local expertise.

Sure by 11u it will all work itself out, but 10u is a crapshoot when it comes to team class. We have AA Mill Creek Red beating the EC Scorpions, PTB Elite, and crushing Midway 26-10. I saw that coming. Same with West GA Bandits. 1 local expert from Georgia NE,NW,S,W,E and inside the Perimeter would do it. I offered my services, but no go.

All that said, I still think USSSA is the best we have around here for now. I agree they had better wake up or things could change fast.
If your not a Head Coach, they'll dismiss you. Trust me, you don't have to be a Head Coach to be influential in the youth travel ball arena. Head Coaches are too busy to watch 100+ games and network like I do. Plus, they have to work for a living, while I just watch 10 year olds play ball like BASEBALL PAPA. Any day games this week!

B-T-W I'm considering moving to Naples next year (to avoid Georgia's State income tax) so called some travel coaches down there to ck things out. USSSA is a fringe player says the guys I spoke to. Hmmm.

I would recommend to all Coaches that if you have to make a choice between a USSSA sanctioned tournament and a USTBA that you choose USTBA every time.

Do we know how the other Divisions turned out? I haven't seen anything posted on the USTBA site. It's good to hear that USSSA has some competition.

Baseball Papa has never seen umpires that he likes as I like to rag them all but all in all I would give the umpiring an A- or B+. I am not real sure how I liked the 3 division format although it was certainly different and fresh. It makes a big difference in pool play as I am sure most teams would rather compete in the Ultimate Division but there is a huge plus in that teams were playing for championships that might not have been playing in the other format.

The reason I like these Directors is that they are accessible and will explain what they are thinking and I feel that this is good if I agree with them or not. At least I know where they are coming from.

Have you ever emailed the USSSA Director and got a response. I have tried emailing the State Director and the National Director and have yet to be responded to. I believe that USSSA feels that they have a lock in Georgia and that they don't have to explain anything to anybody. Very unprofessional organization if you ask me.

I would recommend to all Coaches that if you have to make a choice between a USSSA sanctioned tournament and a USTBA that you choose USTBA every time.

Baseballpapa:

Congrats on your latest win! Your team is certainly one of the best that our state has to offer at the 10U age group. So could you elaborate a little more on the quality of the tourney? How was the officiating? Did you like the three division format? Did you think the director did a good job of breaking the team into the three different divisions?
bmoser Posted - 04/06/2009 : 10:27:55
I wasn't at that tourney, so I don't know either. I was at a 10U 14 team AAA tourney at Mill Creek. Midway Dirty Dawgs, Georgia Warriors and Elite Gamers-Red who were all formerly Major teams and all had just dropped down into AAA competed. AA Mill Creek-Red won it beating Midway 26-10 in the final game. Since Mill Creek Red has also beaten PTB Elite and the EC Scorpions (twice), I'd guess USSSA will be re-classifying them very soon.

The Express didn't make the 1st tier bracket, and the Bulldogs didn't make the 2nd tier bracket. The West GA Bandits had a favorable pool draw, so now we get to see if they can hang with the big boys.

baseballpapa Posted - 04/06/2009 : 09:47:26
Bandits win!!!!!!!!!. But then again they had to win as both the Georgia Bandits and West Georgia Bandits were pitted against each other in the championship finals. In what I consider a upset the West Georgia Bandits beat the East Cobb Scorpions that put together another fine tournament to match up against the Georgia Bandits. The Georgia Bandits bats finally came alive and we won 15-5 in the championship games. This was a tough hard fought win for us as the Home Plate Chili Dogs, Scorpions, and 643 all came to play. Congratulations to the Coaches of these teams as every single time we play you you are better than the last time we played and this is what your goal should always be and that is to get better each time out. Thanks to our Coach for working so hard to keep our edge and focus as it is obvious that if we don't that there are several teams ready to take over the top of the pile.

I say this with emphasis: USTBA puts on 3 times the tournament as USSSA and if USSSA does not begin to respond to the complaints and emails that they have been sent that they might become a thing of the past in Georgia as there is now a organization that can fill the void.
