Posted - 09/01/2015 : 09:00:40 Turntwo and I were having some fun on another thread and I thought it did warrant a new thread.
For all of you new to travel ball please do not EVER say these things. For those of you who have been here a while please list your favorite excuse(s) you have heard on why some kid didn't play well, or get their shot? Turntwo had some great ones to get us rolling:
************************ 1. My son is as good, or better, than the other player, but he just doesn't get the opportunity. (What about practice and pool play games, where he's fielding a ripe ol' .150...
2. All the coach's kids get 'prime' positions (there's only 2 coaches). What about the rest of the starters?
3. Coach doesn't have confidence in my kid, so my kid doesn't play to his potential. (I SWEAR to God, I've hear those exact words out of a parents mouth).
4. My kid SHOULD be lead-off hitter. (Please do not look up number of times caught stealing or picked off, as this would blow this parents argument out of the water--- can you say baserunning liability?)
5. My kid was the starting 3B, and 3-hole hitter on his previous team!!! He should be here as well. (Don't worry that his previous team was a rec-ball all-star team, and your team is a Major. Please don't let facts get in the way of emotion).
6. My kid is: the fastest, hardest thrower, best glove. (Yet not one is substantiated by a stop-watch, radar gun, or fielding % stat). *****************
.....as a side note I would like to add that ANY adult who is chanting "drop it, drop it" at a 12u and under kid should immediately be asked to leave the ball park....come on people let's remember these are KIDS!

I always found this one amazing myself...what does "POP" have to do with a kid striking out? OR what does "POP" have to do with the dribbler the pitcher just fielded?
A bat is a glorified over engineered stick of metal (or wood) logic would dictate that, even with a totally "dead" bat, striking a ball with a blunt object correctly would make the ball go! |

Posted - 09/03/2015 : 10:00:17 my point was that although a high school coach might be amenable to bribes, there is no way a "Dad" could bribe a college coach to get his son on the team. |

This is suppose to be a light and funny thread, not a great philosophical debate on the merits of daddyball or the physiological effects thereof.
Criticalmass, that is exactly what I was talking about. Tiny doesn't mean can't play ball, so tired of hearing the excuses!
Renegade44.....there is a T-shirt you need to get, I saw it all over Cooperstown last year. Picture a plain colored t-shirt with large bold words printed across the chest that simply say "IT IS NOT OKAY!"...kind of sums it up! |

Posted - 09/02/2015 : 17:26:15 Daddyball, Moneyball, quasi travel rec ball, $howcase, oblivious parents, all the same, all full of every and any excuse ever dreamed up. Plus another thousand not yet heard.
Low expectations, pity parties, politics, moneytics, clic's, clac's, umpires, backseat coaches, its alright!, second guesser's, everybody is an infielder, and a Sunday pitcher, bring on the participation trophy, I'm hot, bring me a poweraide and some candy.
But the worst of the worst? "It's alright, It's OK! You almost had it, except for".......well except for the poor fundamentals, bad techniques, scared of the ball, checked out attitude, you're only playing that position cause I'm tired of your parents whining at me and your constant moaning on the bench about it. So there have at it! Its alright.
But its not OK with me! |

Ah, i was electing to avoid this thread until i read this. I recall junior batting 9th on a new travel team at 12U and rotating in and out on a very good team with established players. The point is we left a starting spot on the infield of the 11U team to "play to win" more.
In his 1st AB, bases loaded in Cooperstown and jacked a GS. What a feeling watching him round those bases, next AB another HR and few more RBIs for 6 total. It made the whole change and lack of playing time worth it.
ON a side note, many of the early blooming 12s and 13s he played with and lost a spot too arent even in the game, while son is at ACC school on scholarship. He is the shortest pitcher on the roster.

Posted - 09/02/2015 : 07:13:23 The coach that sat his son was a ROSE in the middle of thorns Daddy BALL happens at all levels One short story at the at the high school there was a dad who offered to donate 30,000 dollars to the so his son would make the team. We could talk about DADDY BALL all day. LET US NOT FORGET ABOUT THE BOYS WHO SIT ON THE BENCH AND THEY ARE OLD ENOUGH TO SEE, WHAT ABOUT THEIR FEELINGS AND BROKEN EGOS If you are the one who in anyway defends DADDY BALL at any level needs to take off your blinders and hug the ones that feel the hurt OH by the way lets not forget it is about the boys and girls who play and not these ego maniac parents WHO FORGOT THAT and the worst of is if you do make a comment then you and your child are blackball. Why is it OK that the coaches can do any hurt the want and then make really nasty comments to other cocahes and get away with they put themselves above the rest |

I will say just this, the team that my son was on DADDY'S kid never sat, not even one out. On the mound multiple times with multiple walks and or hit the batter. When his DAD coach pulled him off the mound he always took out another boy in the field sit the bench and DADDY's boy stayed in game. Many time DADDY'S boy had multiple errors in one inning and gave up 2 or 3 unearned runs DADDY's boy was never pulled to the bench, but if other players made ONE error they were benched. Many times when DADDY'S boy made multiple errors in an inning he came to the dugout saying come on guys you all have to play better. One time it was so bad DADDY'S boy mother came in the dugout and told her son to stopped. THIS WAS THE WORST DADDY BALL TEAM I HAVE EVER BEEN AROUND.
Bummer Laman, but Me thinks I Would have had a private kind of conversation with the coach if this was a consistent issue. I too was lucky enough to have a Daddy coach whos son sat the most, batted last and played left field when on the field. But then again there was another coach who's kid.........well anywho, nevermind that. Dont sweat it, Laman, there are a lot of good places for your kid to be and if you try, you'll find them
I have also been lucky enough to not be surrounded by the excuses for my kid type of parents either........Not a fan of excuses period.......maybe the parents said them when I wasn't listening |

-"My son's instructor said he's amazing, and is doing better than players he trains that are 3-4 years older than him" (The instructor would NEVER lie would he, to work on your emotions and keep you coming back-- re: spending that money). |

Posted - 09/01/2015 : 16:26:15 Laman for a laugh on this topic watch Domingo Ayala on youtube.... the "Coach's Son" episode....and CaCo3 the "blame the equipment" episode is a scream as far as "excuses"...we played on a Dad coach team as well where the Dad really did the right thing and played the kids in the best positions. but in a word Laman if you are located where there are teams with at least one professional non-Dad coach (who the head coach actually listens to if a Dad is the actual head coach) in the mix this is the best way out of Daddy ball if your kid's talent is being wasted. |

Laman, the term daddy ball is alive and well on this site and others. All I can say is, it happens, and often when it happens it is done in rec-league or all-star type situations when it is to the extent you have described.
My son was privileged enough to play for two dad coaches that were the total opposite of what you described. One coach had his son sitting twice as much as every other kid and when he did play he was put in left field and when he did bat he was dead last in the order. Not all dad coaches are to the daddyball extreme you experienced.
Now, having gotten the pep talk about of the way....let's get back to the other best excuses we have heard!
-How about, "the coach has his favorites so he won't play my son"....um, would these favorites be the children who can catch and throw the ball consistently? |
