What type of baseball training (if any) is recommended for these months? With most travel teams starting their team training in January, should kids be allowed to rest or should they be heavy into lessons in Nov/Dec? For those kids that pitch, is giving their arms total rest for 2 months a good idea?

Hitting once a week is probably a good thing to continue as hitting is repetitive event that needs to continue to be worked on. If they have been playing all fall, maybe giving them a couple of weeks off to"reboot" would not be a bad idea.

Nov/Dec should be the time for to start working on strength and endurance. Pushups, crunches, lunges, running, etc. Many will argue to stop throwing during this time, and I won't argue that point. I think you have to look at that on an individual basis. I think there are some that benefit from going to a pitching instructor in the off season as much for the mental parts of the game as the physical. I also think that the off season is the only time of the year that it makes sense to restucture someone's mechanics, whether that is hitting or pitching. If you are making major changes, it only makes sense during that time so their game play is not adversely affected.

It is becoming more and more apparent to me that are norms and there are exceptions. Knowing which your child falls into is the hard part to determine. There is no blanket answer. I am sure there are some good exceptions out there, though.

Whether they continue to train or not doing this time the most important thing to me is they continue to stay active. Here are a few things I do with my kid.

Some type of speed and agility training. (this can be done on your own or through one of the many local facilities that offer programs, ie. Vilocity)

Tee work, soft toss, and hitting practice.
We use wiffles in the basement for all 3. (usually twice a week)
When weather permits we grab the closest field as they are always available this time of year and work on defensive drills and throwing. I have found that a good throwing regiment in the off season is far more productive that just working on pitching. Especially working up a strong long toss session keeping the shoulder, arm and back strength up really pays off in those chilly spring games.
Just one man's opinion.
