Might be too many unfillable holes in this argument, but here goes:

I think everyone (kids, parents and even coaches) would be better served by establishing September 1 as "Signing Day". By then, all teams would be identified and all the tryouts would have been held and all parties would have as much information as possible.

The misinformation this year has been staggering. Asking kids to make a decision in such a muddy environment is asking to be lied to. Some tryouts were held as early as July.

Freeing kids / parents / coaches to regard August as a time of information-gathering without the pressure to commit would go a long way towards creating an environment where better decisions are made.

A six-month season is just a long time to be wrong.

Big Dog,
You are assuming it is treated like league ball where everyone gets offered a spot on a team. It does not work that way. There is no guarantee that you get offered a spot on a team. Just like there is no guarantee that if a team offers a kid a spot, they will take it. Several will come to try out for the Astros and, if they don't make it, may decide to go to a team outside of EC. I would say that most of the teams at 12 and under will carry 12 or less. At 13 teams will mostly carry 11-13 and I would say the Astros will carry 14 of 15.

The issue here once again is adult influence in youth sports. The root of the issue is that this is as much about the coaches in many cases as it is about supporting the players. Every parent needs to understand the options and do what is best for their kid and not give in to the pressures of early commitments. The nature of travel ball is that turnover is natural.....some players advance faster than others and therefore find it best for them to move on to more competitive teams from time to time. A lot of the stress can be removed thoughif we let the players themselves become a bigger part of the decision making process....... Frankly I do not know why all coaches no not use the ECB tryouts for their own purposes..... There is no rule that says non-ECB coaches can not attend and scout. ECB is pretty comprehensive. It is a great opprotunity to really benchmark hundreds of players against each other......I also agree with coach Dan....I think there are lots of quality places to play other than just ECB...more so than in the past.

Dan I understand your point.

Meaning that there are 150 kids playing in an age group not counting
all those that went to evaluations that didnt find a team.

It has become much easier there as time goes by to find a team to play on , so the overall talent level naturally has dropped as a result by dilution .

how do the roster sizes get set? If there are 150 kids trying out and there are 10 teams then 15 per team? Or will some kids get cut? Obviously as the ages change roster sizes get bigger anyway as some players are now designated as pitcher only. So, if there were 150 kids trying out in the 13u...how many kids per team?

Irrespective of a signing date , which is a very good idea (good luck getting everyone to honor it)I have to comment on all the related buzz about the ECB tryouts and how it may affect this or that.

Is it just me and my imagination or has the former luster and achievement of playing baseball there all but gone out the window?

To wit: with 9 or 10 teams @ 13u alone and 14-15 per roster you have nearly 150 boys in just one age group.

Newsflash : theyre not all quality players otherwise no one else around the circuit would have any competitive teams !

Or , again it could just be time for my meds

USSSA is still funky like that. We had a problem this spring where we played in an early tournament without our full roster. We were knocked out in the first round placing something like 5th or 6th. Top two seed were supposed to get a berth. Well, the top 3 or 4 already had berths, so we were given one without us knowing. Coach tried to update roster later in the season when we had finalized our roster and we got frozen out since we had "qualified" for a World Series spot. They wouldn't even let us turn down the slot and attempt to re-qualify. Needless to say, we had to quit playing USSSA for the remainder of the year.

Received the following note from GA USSSA

"Please remember that Georgia USSSA Baseball DOES NOT require Online Rosters for the fall. Online Rosters are not required for the 2009 season until January 1, 2009. Use the fall as a "tryout" period for new players. No roster will be forzen until after January 1, 2009."

The only entity with a large enough hammer would likely be USSSA.

Signing a USSSA roster sheet on or after September 1 (but not before), would make it incumbent on coaches and players to make sober, mutually-beneficial commitments.

It's going to be interesting because it seems that everyone except Bulldog Baseball and PC Vipers have about half their team trying out with other teams. (I know there are some coaches that think they have most coming back but unknown to them 5 or 6 are at other tryouts)

It is the largest version of musical chairs I have ever seen.

Would you use the Fall season as a tryout period? Otherwise you probably could not go later than 9/1. Several teams use the fall to work on fundamentals and play some tournaments to get the players used to each other before going into spring. a 10/1 date would be a little late for that.

The problem with the signing day process is that there is no one group governing this. It is a free market society that allows coaches to market their team to parents and players at any given point in time.

truthfully, i have no idea how this would or could work without an association of associations. And would have to be more than that proverbial gentleman's handshake. details would have to be worked out amongst these associations.

the real kicker and a serious drawback would involve those independent teams that do not belong to associations, such as ECB, Shaw Park,Sandy Plains, etc. but build their team(s) without constraint.

overall, tho, i don't see how it could work, ultimately, given issues with the above and the insurmountable problems associated with a few individual egos. in addition to the impossibility of oversite.

One reason to have your tryout after EC is because the coach would then get players that wanted to play for that team. Those that don't make their team of choice at EC would still have options away from EC. Another reason may be that a team is only looking for a couple of players to fill gaps or holes.

Since the Bombers are having their tryout a week after EC, it'll be interesting to see who or how many show up. And to, they probably had their hands full with the Elite 24 and couldn't start planning or working on next season.

You cant use the fall as a tryout period. That would not be fair to the kids that dont make it. They will be on the outside looking in and that would be terrible for alot of kids. Most of the kids are "known" to most coaches so they know who they want. You may have some kids wanting to play in the Marietta area from Rome or Dalton, they may need a longer look but from what I see Sept 1 could easily be a signing date. Most families are looking for something stable that they can go through a fall and winter getting ready for the spring. Did that make any sense??????
Big Padre Posted - 08/12/2008 : 11:25:36
Just curious - how do you propose this would work? If tryouts are held during August, when do the teams make their offers (right after their tryout or 7/31 or ?)? How many offers are made (not knowing who will/will not accept)? What happens if you do not receive enough acceptances - or too many?

Your idea has merit, just not sure how you can work this?

The EC tryout is at the end of August and theoretically teams are not finalized until around 9/1. In reality, though, many teams outside of EC are trying to get players before EC teams can get to them. This pushes the timeline forward.

If you were a team outside of EC, why would you want to wait until AFTER the EC tryouts to have yours and miss out on potential players.

that's one of the smartest things to come off this board in ages. Only change I'd make is to 10/1 rather than 9/1
