A team my son was going to try out for recently pulled the plug on their fall season because of a new GHSA rule that appears to prohibit HS coaches from coaching 8th graders. I believe the rule in question is this one:

2.69 (b) (4) (d) It is illegal for a high school coach to conduct a clinic or coach in a non-school competitive setting with eighth-grade athletes out of season during the school year.

There are other tryouts still posted for teams to be coached by HS coaches. I wonder if there's a work around or have these coaches just not been informed of this rule that was just recently added to the GHSA Constitution & By-laws for 2008-2009.

Does anyone have any inside scoop on this?

I was told by a Cobb county H.S. coach that Cobb county has a rule that prohibits 8th graders from playing high school sports. And the JV would be considered a HS sport. I do not believe Bartow county or the city of Marietta (MHS) have this rule.

I believe the "out of season" might refer to after the school year is over..ie summer ball..

As far as not any 8th grade team that can play on a major of elite level...well that is true as far as elite (which when I was involve in a USSSA State Championship) there were 4 elite teams and in actuallity only 3).. as far as major level I saw 8th grade teams beat "major" level teams every week..this was 2 years ago and I'm thinking some 8th grade teams are even better...Go to Tennesee and I've seen 8th grade feeder teams that could compete with any major team out there..Nope still haven't seen an 8th grade team that could beat teams like the 14U EC Astro's and others of that depth consistantly in tournaments...but seen some private school 8th grade teams from Tennesee that on a one off probably could give them a run for their money. Most 8th grade teams tend to be below average, but than again by definition, 50% of all travel teams are below average..

As far as you don't need to play HS School baseball to get to college...well that might be true and it might not be...but I wouldn't use the exception as something that would be true for the majority...not playing HS ball does raise a red flag...

I believe that they can do it in the Summer time, but not in the Fall. Case in point is Chris Mccrainey at Alpharetta HS. He coaches Team Georgia in the Summer, but cannot do it in the Fall. He had several Alpharetta HS players on that team and apparently is with in the GHSA rules. As long as there are not more than 2 players, I thought it was 3 but was wrong, from that coaches school they should also be with in the rules.

For the most part HS coaches are free to choose/exclude anyone they want from their team.

Gold Glove,
I am not sure I would want to play for a coach like that. Contrary to popular belief, not every HS coach is a good coach and going to benefit your child to play for him. Now I realize that most kids goal is to make the HS team but I can't believe a coach would turn his back on a freshman that could throw in the high 80's/low 90's or a slick fielding defensive player that hits .500. Come on, a HS coach worth his salt wants his future players getting reps and playing at the highest competition level possible so when he gets them they will be ready to step in and play. Anything else is someone's alternate agenda.

There is not an 8th grade feeder team out there that can play at a Major or elite level. It just does not make sense for a Major or Elite player to go and play for a feeder team that will not help them develop.

It's not like football where you start to learn the offensive and defensive plays of the HS coach so you get a jump and are better prepared for the transition.

There are many arrogant High School coaches who believe that it’s their way or the highway. Most of them don’t have the record to back it up. You don't need to play High School sports (except football) anymore to get to college, despite what the High School Coach tells you.

Do you think there is a rule against a High School Head Coach saying "if you don't play for our 8th Grade feeder team you might as well pack up your bags your freshman year because you won't be welcome in my program."

PAGE 40 of the WHITE BOOK (online at ghsa.net):

At any given point in time, only one (1) coach in a sport may work with up to two (2) athletes in skill-building drills. A GHSA coach (certified teacher or community coach) may not coach a non-GHSA team in a competitive setting during the school year that includes any player(s) who participate in the sport he/she coaches at the member school.

It is illegal for a high school coach to conduct a clinic or coach in a non-school competitive setting
with eighth-grade athletes out of season during the school year.
(e) This prohibition does not apply to the summer months.

For the simple folk: The white book is the Georgia High School Association rule book. GHSA is to Georgia High Schools what the NCAA is to Colleges.

They can as long as it is 3 players or less. Otherwise it is in fact a violation. I did not however think that would pertain to 8th grade.

Didn't know that was a new rule...Our HS coach always said he couldn't coach either 8th grade feeder team of the Fall ball teams....Now I'm certain he probably had "input" on both of those teams and he was "brief" on them, but as far as any "oficial" capacity, I was under the impression that this was prohibited...this was 2 years ago...maybe the "new" rule was just to clarify what I thought was always the case..same thing about football...isn't there a time during the calander year, when coaches of one sport are not allowed to coach that sport..Always thought baseball coaches weren't allowed to do "baseball" until sometime around the middle of Febuary..

It looks like Coach Bass' team in Sandy Springs will not be able to practice with him until around Memorial Day of 2009. Hmmmm.....
