I was talking to my son's soon to be middle school baseball coach, and was telling him that he wanted to go out for the ball team next year. After hearing what size bat he has to use and how big the field is, I was wondering how does one take a 85lbs child and let him swing a -5 when he's been swinging a -10. This will have to happen in the off season during football season.

Nice call myth is precisely what it is.

Anybody out there truly think they have an edge on other players because of what team they played on pre high school?

High School baseball is far too competitive for that kind of nonsense unless the coach only wants to stick around for one season

Scott youre on the mark .

And suggestions that you play a "feeder" (note qoutation marks)team so to be with school or district friends are worthy too.

I hear direct from high school coaches known for years that they care NOT where a boy has played for teams or what his last name is.

Too many kids showing up for the team they carry 20 to 25 tops no room for politics or they get crunched in the games then theyre out the door

Its is the middle school team not a feeder program...He will be a 6th grader and wants to go out for the team...I think he will get better playing time of a travel team and sit the bench on the other, that is if he makes it...

WJrWolverines,
For clarification the league is a Dizzy Dean league and, based on the new changes for Dizzy Dean, bat requirement is -3 drop.

"High School baseball is far too competitive for that kind of nonsense unless the coach only wants to stick around for one season."

Well yes it is, and if your son is a stud, I doubt it makes one bit of difference where he plays, pre high school...now if your son is just "a middle of the road" type of ballplayer"...it makes a big difference!!! When it gets down to lets say, the last three to make the team, the kid who's been in, and supported the program will get the nod everytime!!! Askanyone who's been in HS ball...there is not much difference if any, between the last 3-4 that make the team and the last 3-4 who don't. HS baseball coaches are constantly in search of money for there (in my opinion) underfunded programs...don't think they don't remember who's been supporting the team and who hasn't...

Me personally would rather him just keep playing Travel Ball because there will be more talent there. He wants to go out for the team for his own reasons. I am all for Travel Baseball because there is more of it and many more teams to play with great tallent.

I have never been on the side of Middle School for the sake of Staying in the system. I have had many arguments with HS coaches about the way they do things. Each day I have less and less respect for High School Coaches, and I was associated with a High School team for 10 years (but never allowed to make the big decisions).

And while I do defend a lot of things about East Cobb, one thing I do preach is COACHING IS ALWAYS THE ANSWER, and will my child learn and get to play the game?

Middle School or Travel - Which coach is better for the player?
Travel or Rec - Which coach is better for the player?
ECB or elsewhere - Which coach is better for the player?
Private School or Public School - Which coach is better for the player?

I think there is a difference between playing for a feeder team that is with other middle school players and actually playing for a middle school team that is part of the school. If it is part of the school, kids are going to want to be part of the school spirit, just like playing in HS.

It's not like playing in HS necessarily offers you the best coaching, facilities, competition, or view by scouts.

I think the original topic was on Middle School Teams. (Private School I would guess). Not Feeder programs. Middle School team's (not Feeder) practices and games are scheduled to start around 4:00 PM during the week. We have experienced no problem playing on a travel team and the Middle School Team. The Middle School season is over by the third week in April. The coach at our school had the players submit their travel teams tournament schedule, so he could make sure no pitcher was over used...

GLow, I noticed that they are going to start making -3 drops in 29" bats to take advantage of the new Dizzy Deans requirements. It is going to be funny seeing 13U rec teams trying to swing -3 bats and the travel teams out there using -10. I have a feeling it is a couple years away that every organization is going to require it...

I have heard of other sanctioning bodies that are trying to make their batters go to a -3 limit as well.

The problem is they are not thinking about the problems it will cause. Putting the bat on the ball is challenging enough but to make kids swing something that is waaaay too heavy for them just does not make sense. I could see going to something -8.5 or heavier, but not -3.

Greg: Do you know the name of the league or are you referring to the 13U Canton Snappers who played out of Legion Field last season? I haven't heard about this.

Have to agree with ya on that 12Ucoach ... sure seems to be more competitive environments available than the Mid School programs - at least from what I have seen.

Ahhh come on coach! I read a lot of your posts, some where you respond to ECB naysayers so you've been on that side of the fence. Now what's your motivation for taking a swipe at middle school (feeder team) baseball?

I know for my son playing with his middle school teams (not just baseball) has been great experiences. Plus the more days he is on the Baseball Field the happier he feels... A good sixth grader might play half a game on the middle school team. I saw one middle school team bring 24 kids to a game... they looked like sardines in our small dugouts while they were batting. I don't know how much fun that would be ... I guess it all depends.

From what I know 11u and 12u play on the same size field.(50/70) You only have to use a -5 bat when you get in 14u so when your 12u use a -10 then in 13u use a -8 then by 14u you will be ready for a -5 bat.
