This is an interesting topic. Ive been going round and round about it. If your a coach that has been successful you dont have to go to other teams tryouts. They just post a tryout or a message about inquiring about their team. If you have to resort to unethical ways to recruit kids you shouldnt be coaching. They should take a hard look at themselves in the mirror, and so should the parents that accept this. There are a ton of ways to get kids at YOUR tryout the right way. |

Very Funny...part of me thinks it's self gratifying and ego driven for them to stand there and watch. Small time coaches with small time skills. It's not hard to get data on kids and parents, try Zabba and put in some time with phone work.
Additionally, the coaches you reference are going nowhere. I was there and saw them. |

Just as ethical as a coach demanding a decision by the parents before the other teams the players have tried out for have made a decision.... |

If your son was to tryout for say the Westside Wrasslers and then he doesn't get picked, would you not let your son play for someone else who thought he was good enough to be on his team? I think parents should say we are trying to make this team but if it doesn't workout then we would love to tryout for you. Part of the issue comes from the parents, It should be about what you think is best for your son. |

Do I believe it is right for a coach to go to another team's tryout and sit in the stands and try to talk a parent out of playing for that team and playing for his? NO!!
I realize the market of attracting players has gotten very competitive but there are still the unwritten rules that need to be followed.
Well, here we are again in what several of us like to call "The Free Agent Period" where coaches try to find players to improve their team next year, some players try to find better teams to be on, and others try to hold on to the spot they have. Some times it's like a nice ballet where everything moves in motion together, other times it's like a Jr. High dance where lots of people are getting their toes stepped on and their feelings hurt. Especially when the date swapping starts.

I guess a couple of ways to look at it.
1) I think it's pretty bush league and disrespectful. Watching off to the side is one thing but to talk to the parents during the tryouts is another. At least wait until the tryouts are completed and then slip the parents your card or get their phone # and call on your own time, not the other coaches, if you're really that interested in a particular player. Some coaches are scout wannabes and trying to one-up another coach or steal a player because they have a grudge.
2) If the tryouts are at a public facility (almost all) not a whole lot you can do about anybody watching. Just be confident in your coaching ability, reputation, and ability to keep the families you want to keep. |
