Does anyone know if all the young kids from countries like the Dominican have the arm problems we have? Does playing young help or hurt? Throwing bottle caps and tennis balls? I am sure countries like Japan are putting kids into baseball camps like they have done with Gymnastics etc at early age if they show some signs of being good at a particular sport. Do they have arm problems and growth plate things or is it just an arm wearing out as you get older from pitching at an older age? I just wonder?

Charlie:

My brother thought my fascination with Dr Mike Marshall was cultish...until he went to see for himself. He was so impressed that two days after getting back from Z-Hills he was having beers with Pedro's and Curt Schilling's doctor. As it turned out the doctor told my brother that he and Pedro were going to open a baseball facility in the Dominican Republic.... "to eliminate baseball pitching injuries". I have to assume that they have a problem with pitching arm injuries in the Dominican Republic if Pedro plans on opening a facility to prevent them. By the way this was in January 2007 and the doctor said that Pedro was going to win the 2007 CYA. While this doctor was instrumental in helping the Red Sox win the 2004 World Series, he is clueless as to what causes pitching arm injuries. Most doctors are.

I know in Taiwan they are very concerned anout all the injuries especially to catchers. I also know that growth plates are the same no matter what the race, creed or nationality. Stress them too much and you will permnantly deform your arm.

As For Dice K...coaches that hate walks should watch him. He does not give in on fast ball counts. 3-1 , 2-1, etc. He throws tough pitches. He is a very skilled pitcher. I think Dice knows that it is not walks that kill you, it's extra base hits. Also, it looks like he pronates the release of his gyroball which is the only reason his arm has survived this long.

Finally, it seems like there are even more pitching arm injuries than normal this year in MLB and it seems like fastball speeds are down. I attribute this to lack of "juice". This plus getting our clocks cleaned in the upcoming Olympics may get people to finally take a look at where we are at. We shall see,

jrog76, good observation. Dice-K still gets the wins because the SOX are loaded with excellent middle relief and closing pitching and great bats. I am still wondering if he was really worth $50 mill just to talk to. Chuck James would have been much cheaper..........

Sounds like Chuck James.

Not sure about the injuries in Japan, but being a huge Red Sox I notice that Dice K has a lot of wins but struggles in almost every game at the end of the 4th inning and the 5th inning to hold on to get the recorded win.

Great question!

The Japanese seem to throw far more than our guys do. At what age does that begin? Are the ones we hear about (Matsuzaka, Wang, etc.) examples of what a heavy workload can do, or are they merely survivors?
