Was wondering what you guys see as far as pitching velocities at the various age groups. My son is 16 playing 18, and we consistently see 85-90mph.
What do you think are the avg speeds for kids throwing?
Im interested to see the data for:

11-12 60-70
13-14 65-75
15-16 70-80
17-18 75-90
Obviously, there are junk pitchers and gas pitchers that skew those numbers, but that is what I've seen throughout the ages as the norm averages. |

Unless someone is using a reliable radar gun, I wouldn't count on the accuracy of the estimates you'll get from this question, especially for the younger age groups where I've never seen anyone else bring a gun to game beyond my own OCD self.
That said, since I do have a gun and have used it.
My son's 11/12 AA teams saw 50-66. I realize that's a big range, but we really did see low 50s even at 12.
At 13, AAA, low-mid 60s was pretty standard, upper 50s was rarer, and I don't recall anyone who actually got to 70 in the game my son played in, though we did watch the Bandits play once in a pool game with a guy pitching who was, IIRC, sitting around 78.
At 14, AAA everything went up another notch, low 60s became the low end, mid to upper 60s was standard, and low-mid 70s showed up occasionally. Did see one team with two guys in the 50s still, though.
At 14 I was also seeing HS 9th/JV games. 9th graders going anywhere from 62-76, most JV players 70+ all the time, couple of sophomores on JV as high as 79. Only saw a couple of Varsity games early in the season (so still cold), clocked a sophomore in the low 80s, couple guys I don't know the age on in the low-mid 80s, a senior who sat at 87, and 1st round MLB draftee (as a hitter) who touched 92 and sat 89-90 most of the time pitching.
Didn't break out the gun during the 15u fall season (majors), but most of the guys are probably sitting mid to high 70s, though I've seen a couple I suspect are getting to 80-82.
Finally, went to a 16u championship series at EC a few years ago, pool play only, and didn't see very many guys getting into the 80s. I suspect that's around the JV/V dividing line, depending on ability to locate and being LH. |

I can speak for my son only. Middle of the summer, this past year, 15 playing 17u. Pitched 17u PG in FM.
Will turn 16 next month. 6'2" 200lbs.
Pin point accuracy
Top velo 84
Cruise 80-82
Chg 74-76
85% 1st pitch strikes
We saw a lot of kids throwing harder, but control was an issue for many. |
