Posted - 11/15/2013 : 12:49:48 I think they should have given the Cobb county taxpayers the option to vote for a SPLOST speifcally for this instead of robbing the county coffers while no one was looking. I'm all for the Braves being closer and think CObb can be a great home for the Braves but it feels like the commisioners got us on this one, asking for forgiveness rather than permission. |

Posted - 11/14/2013 : 20:03:05 In what way is not having to provide the Braves with a ~$200M gift in renovations "missing the boat" for the city? Among other things, the Braves also wanted a guaranteed $10M in revenue from the improvements around Turner Field, and limits on retail and restaurants nearby (presumably to guarantee that people spend their money inside the park). Source: http://www.ajc.com/news/news/exclusive-documents-reveal-braves-wish-list-for-tu/nbsM3/
20-year projected income to the City from the Braves staying in Turner, $60.8M, source: http://saportareport.com/blog/2013/08/impact-study-atlanta-braves-a-100-million-home-run-for-economy/. Not sure why Cobb should expect significantly more than that.
BTW, Cobb has an $86.4M shortfall in their school system, is losing 182 teachers this year, and furloughing everyone else in the system for 5 days. $300M (the new projected figure according to Cobb) is about 85% of what the county will collect in education taxes in 2013. If Cobb wants to give away $300M dollars, wouldn't the taxpayers there prefer to get it back rather than handing it to the Braves? |

Posted - 11/14/2013 : 16:13:29 City of Atlanta missed the boat on this deal. Worked on it for 18months according to AJC. Would not agree on upgrades at or around the park. Braves go to Cobb Co. for approx. $200 million investment on their part...not bad.
BTW - as I recall the Olympic Stadium cost $140 million to construct and another $70 million to convert to baseball after the Olympics. $70 million a great deal for Braves owners then and $200 million contribution by Braves a good deal now to go to Cobb Co. City of ATL wanted to work with Falcons more than Braves .... doesn't make sense. quote: Originally posted by 743
I keep hearing people say there at no places to eat around the stadium, that doesn't even make sense to me, you want people eating over priced food at the park. Why pay for over priced food outside the park? I also think it was done in a sneaky fashion which usually means something is not right.

Posted - 11/13/2013 : 14:21:22 A little op-ed piece on AJC http://www.ajc.com/weblogs/jay-bookman/2013/nov/13/braves-deal-cobb-officials-act-they-have-something/
The Braves, in turn, are fully owned by Liberty Media, a Colorado-based corporation with $18 billion in annual revenues. The controlling shareholder is John C. Malone, who has a personal net worth of some $6.7 billion and is the largest individual private landowner in the country, with more than 2 million acres of property.
Food Stamps, extended unemployment, welfare, etc... are Federal subsidies and have little or no impact to how Cobb County schools are funded.
Cobb County will make plenty of money off this deal. That is the mantra of every sports team looking for a fancy new stadium off the backs of public tax payers. jacjacatk has pointed that out already. Time to wake up and realize when you are getting the shaft. |

Posted - 11/13/2013 : 12:43:45 no thanks on the South Forsyth location... traffic here is bad too... All they need to do is Keep the old stadium and build some restaurants/bars around it to create more revenue. |

If you want to have enough money to pay teachers and to put into the school system, quit paying out for every person that doesn't want to work for themselves. Food Stamps, extended unemployment, welfare, etc... Those programs don't pay anything back. At least there is a revenue benefit from this investment.

Publicly financed stadiums do essentially nothing to benefit the economies of the entities that subsidize them and represent the worst possible kind of corporate welfare. But clearly, the shareholders of Liberty Media, the $16 billion dollar market cap corporation that made $798 million in profits last year, needs that $450 million from Cobb County more than the residents of Cobb County do. If only we could get rid of all the freeloaders in society, we could build new stadiums for every big corporation. |

Posted - 11/12/2013 : 14:45:18 Cobb county taxpayers getting shafted to the tune of $450 million. Where is this public money coming from? We furlough teachers, cram more students into smaller classrooms, and cut programs from schools. I don't think the politicians who cut this deal are looking after our best interests. I say we vote these bums out of office the first chance we get.
Anyone who thinks that they will get better services at the new stadium are kidding themselves, the Ted is a very nice park. You'll still be looking of $15+ parking, $5+ hot dogs, and $7 beers. If you want a new stadium finance yourself, you'll be making plenty on gate an concessions. |

No idea if there was anywhere reasonable to find the land there, though.
Agreed. Plenty of of space in South Forsyth, and easier to expand the existing Sandy Springs MARTA line north. More centrally located where the ticket holders come from with easier access for Gwinnett folks. ITK has it right - they are technically staying within ATL now with the Cobb location. I'll be going to more games in 2017 for sure. |

"Technically", they will still be in Atlanta. That area of Cobb has an Atlanta mailing address, so the stadium location won't have a "Marietta, GA" address. The Circle 75/Wildwood corridor had its mailing address changed to Atlanta about 15 or so years ago to accommodate some influential companies that relocated their HQ to that area and wanted an Atlanta mailing address. One of the many reasons that made that location an appealing option to the Atlanta brass. |

Posted - 11/12/2013 : 09:43:11 I think it makes perfect sense to move it closer to the fan base but the traffic problems in Cobb and across I-285 would be exponentially worse and they are pretty bad already.
