Posted - 11/08/2013 : 14:57:13 It's great to see that some organizations do listen and adapt to their customers. After many of us have expressed our thoughts for years on the BBCOR/Drop 5 topic with respect to 14u, Triple Crown is changing their rules for next season and taking the 14u age group to BBCOR exclusively.
I participated in a poll they circulated on the topic and apparently the feedback to them was a preference to go to drop 3 for 14u. Below is the email they sent announcing the change:
Coaches,
With the 2013 baseball season officially slowing down, we know you are busy preparing offseason workouts and building your tournament schedule for 2014. With that in mind, we want to remind teams of Triple Crown’s bat rules for next season. Please note the “13u and Younger”, “15u and Older”, and “19u Wood Bat” rules have not changed and will remain the same as 2013. However, the “14u Division” will change and as of May 1, 2014, -5 bats will not be allowed in this age group. Bats are restricted to -3 weight/length ratio with the BBCOR stamp. Please check the tournament’s rules section if you are playing in an event prior to May 1, 2014, as some markets may be enforcing the new rule starting January 1, 2014. Our concern has been and always will be for the safety of the player. The BBCOR bat was designed to behave similar to its wood counterpart; providing safety and fairness to position players and pitchers, while awarding hitters that demonstrate sound swing mechanics. While the adjustment may be difficult for some teams initially, we feel the need for creating a safer game will prevail in the minds of coaches and parents. Thank you for your continued support of Triple Crown Baseball, and we look forward to seeing you at the ballfield in 2014!
Sincerely,
TC Baseball Staff 2014 Triple Crown Bat Rules
13u and Younger: All bats -5 or greater must be stamped BPF 1.15. Must be a baseball bat – no restriction on weight or length as long as bat has “BPF 1.15” stamp. All -3 bats must be stamped BBCOR. Wood bats allowed.
14u: Starting May 1, 2014 -3 weight/length ratio only; all -3 bats must be stamped BBCOR; wood bats allowed. Prior to May 1, 2014 -5 or -3 weight/length ratio may be used; all -5 bats must be stamped BPF 1.15; all -3 bats must be stamped BBCOR; wood bats are allowed. Please check the tournament rules section of this event as some markets already require the use of the BBCOR -3 bat at the 14u division.
15u and Older: -3 weight/length ratio only. All bats must be stamped BBCOR. Wood bats allowed.
19u: To be considered a wood bat, a bat must be made of a single piece of wood. All other bats such as bamboo or two piece must meet the BBCOR standards and have the BBCOR stamp. |

Posted - 11/08/2013 : 22:30:32 Very positive development, and kudos to those leading these changes. Thank you. Safety was a legitimate issue.
This will have significant effect on many players and teams. The strongest teams (pun only partly intended) will get stronger, with most advanced, bigger and stronger athletes having even greater advantage.

Looks like they half-listened. The new rule doesn't go into affect until May 1st Triple Crown has 4-5 tourneys scheduled before that date. If given the choice, most 14s will swing -5 if its legal. .
If you read it closely, the local TC director may choose to adopt any time between Jan 1 and May 1, but at the very least, it will be in effect for the summer. |
