My sons team were in the elite 8 last night of the perfect game tourey, tied 1-1 in the 2nd inning. There we 3 umpires working the game, one down each line and the home plate ump. The opposing team's batter hit a ball down the first base line and the first base ump threw his hands up and yelled foul. At that point the RF slowed to a jog and noone else moved to backup ositions etc as the ball headed towards the corner, then the homeplate ump stuck his arm out and made a non-verbal call but fair indication.. The runner kept running and made it to 3rd. They eventually scored him and although we didn't lose the game on that call it was defeintely a momentum-changer. I welcome opinions on this and the correct rules as the homeplate ump said it was his call event though his counterpart yelled foul and indicated wtih the arms the same signal. Not only did he make a non verbal call, he waited until after the first base ump signalled foul.

My point was that an umpire never yells fair ball under any circumstance. You will/should never hear an umpire yell fair ball. Hard to believe that after the field ump yelled foul they allowed the play to continue. Glad it didn't affect the outcome of the game.

Bear, homeplate ump call or motion was after teh hands up and "FOUL" call of 1st base ump. Correct that he had the "right" to make the call, he just made his partner. Thanks for all of the feedback.

Just to add, an umpire never yells "fair ball". He just points towards fair territory. Sounds like the home plate ump got that correct. Agree that once foul is declared by any umpire it is foul whether it was that ump's call to make or not.

Thanks Allstar and Chris, that is exactly what we thought. It's a shame and is a part of baseball, but that play hung over our team for several innings and we all hoped for better officiating in a Perfect Game Elite 8 contest. Kudos to the other team for playing better and winning the game, we just hate that that call wasn't done correctly.

Once it is called Foul...its foul. This should have been discussed prior to the game...I was watching one of my kids games and a play at third had the BU call safe as he ran across the field and the HP that came up the line call out...Talk about a fiasco.

Home plate ump is correct, it WAS his call, but once the 1B ump made the call, the ball is dead and the play is over. This also wouldn't be the type of play where you could "get help" like if the First Baseman got pulled off the bag or a runner left too early on a tag. 1B ump killed the play.
