Are there different types of baseball scouts maybe unpaid. I see teams that claim to have someone on their staff who is a scout? What does that mean? Are there unpaid scouts? To say you are a scout for a professional team I would assume I would see your name on the website of the MLB team under minor league or scouting dept. The scouts I know are all listed on those pages? |

There are a lot of area scouts. Guys that you'd be very surprised to learn that they are, in fact, scouts. The part time PE teacher at one of my son's private school is an area scout for the Mets. One of the dads on one of my other son's high school team is an area scout for the White Sox.
There are quite a few in the Metro area that you'd never know unless they told you. |

Yes there are different levels. As houndfan mentioned, the top guys are the director of scouting and the crosscheckers. Below that are the area scouts. I believe these guys are all paid by the club. Then there are the associate, or birddog scouts. These guys get paid on a sort of commission basis. You may not be able to verify these guys unless you can talk directly to the area or crosschecker guys. |

There are a number of different levels of scouts. Doubtful they are all listed on the team webpage for verification. Typically, at least in the organizations that I have worked for they only list the director of scouting and possibly cross checkers on the web. A little research could point you to validate the claims of the individual, but if you are questioning you can always call the organization. Keep in mind there is a lot of turnover at the lower levels of scouting but you should be able to verify... |
