Has anyone seen benefits/risks of having your kid participate in wrestling prior to the spring baseball season? I personally feel would be a good strength/agility program but question more targeted towards any injury problems?

Thanks

My son started wrestling last year as a 6th grader and it helped him tremendously in BB and FB with strength, conditioning and mental toughness. When it came time for BB, we started BB and still went to wrestling when we could. With wrestling, you can dictate your own tournament schedule, so interfering with BB is not a big deal.

I wrestled 4 years in high school and have always appreciated the benefits including for others who wrestled - knowledge of true conditioning , one on one toughness, will ..... hey you can get injured in ANY sport , you can even get injured tripping over a curb out in the parking lot ..... don't pass up wrestling for baseball the payoff is great now for baseball and later for everything .

Most high schools have junior programs. Check your high school's wrestling website

Had a few kids on my BB teams over the years who wrestled. I don't think the injury aspect is that big of a deal. The biggest issue is wrestling generally overlaps with BB practices/workouts in Jan and Feb. The bigger HS programs have "voluntary workouts" that a few weeks after school starts and last until tryouts in January. That is the time used to evaluate the "makeup" and intangibles of the players and High School athletes who want to do BB and some other sport better be very good at both or they may find themselves very low on the depth chart.

I have raised two American Wrestlers. One won it in Oklahoma the other Missouri. When you step on the mat with one of our Freshman he will have almost 10 yrs wrestling experience. So if you want to compete in addition to your school workouts you will have to take lessons and attend winter camps. I would recommend The Wrestling Academy @ Lawrenceville and Smyrna. It will improve everything about him and his baseball. Baseball is the sport you play to get out of shape. Everyone on the core team can do 100 push ups under 75 sec. My son laughs when the baseball coaches say we are going to make you do push ups or run you. We wouldnt be playing Major if we didnt wrestle. I think it is funny when I hear baseball team say how they are going to kick someones butt when they cant even put their hands on them. You will out score them only. You have no idea what kicking someones butt is or getting your butt kicked until you wrestle and you will do both. As a parent if you think you get nervous in baseball wait to you see someone putting your kids head through the mat or worst. It is a tough sport that build confidence, pride and character.

If he's in 7th grade, take advantage of being able to now and do it. Once you get to high school, each coach will do their best to "encourage" you to play only their sport. He may enjoy wrestling more than baseball and now would be the best opportunity to figure that out. Any additional athletic benefits are a bonus to whatever sport(s) he chooses to play in the future.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! He is a 7th grader and has wanting to get involved since last year. I just think personally if he has aspirations to play middle/high school football and baseball this is a great training program...also since he loves to compete will help him get involved in the winter sports program.

I'm a HUGE wrestling fan and ex coach. I would offer you this:

1 -Are you just going out for wrestling for the first time as a high school freshman ?
2 - If yes, it's a very difficult sport to adapt to as a freshman for a variety of reasons.
3 - If you're like most wrestlers, you don't wrestle to lose....you wrestle to win. Winning means commitment. If you succeed at winning, you may go deep into late season tournaments. These will jeopardize baseball practice in the early spring/late winter.
4 - Even if you don't suffer a specific injury, wrestling at a high level is very hard on your body. Took my son 4 weeks into baseball season to really recover from the state tournament ! Really inhibited his participation on the high school baseball team.

Now with all that said, in my mind, no other sport prepares a young person for life like wrestling. The mental and physical demands teach an internal discipline that benefits the athlete across many spectrum's in life, including baseball. My son has wrestled since 3rd grade though so he's been acclimated to the sport. I can tell you he has benefitted significantly from it on the baseball field as he hits for power and average and has the balance of a cat ! Not to mention his "never say die attitude".

My son wrestles. Yes there is a chance of injury as in EVERYOTHER sport. I love the mental and physical workout he gets in wrestling that is unlike any other sport.

I'm a big wrestling guy since my younger son wrestles in HS. I don't think I would have let my older, baseball son wrestle though. Wrestling is awesome for getting in shape, strengthening muscles that you would never use in any other sport and it's great for character. But there is a ton of chance for injury in terms of torque on the shoulders and elbow that I don't think I would have wanted my pitcher son to be subjected to. It's a personal decision though. My son had a teammate on his summer team that was a stud wrestler and a pretty good pitcher. He did both and didn't have a problem. He is playing baseball in college now. It just scared me when my older son's obvious preferred sport was baseball. Just couldn't see taking the chance. Just how I felt about it. Others may feel differently.
