Posted - 08/19/2012 : 16:40:07 I'm looking for a new bat for my son and want to get some opinions. He will be 11 in October, weighs about 70lbs and is 4"8. He is not a big fan of composite, but he hasn't ruled it out either. He is more of a contact hitter and he usually leads off. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Posted - 08/23/2012 : 15:38:31 Easton S3 gets my vote. My son has absolutely killed the ball with it last Spring and so far this fall. |

Posted - 08/23/2012 : 14:44:07 Ross, S-3!!! Hands down... Would've said the Prodigy a year ago, but the new legit bats they made to stand the durability has made them dead bats in my opinion. The S-3 still has a lot of pop for the smaller less aggressive swingers. We rode the Prodigy for a few years until last years legit came out. All my kids hate it now and we gave them away to players who couldn't afford them. The bats you see on the WS right now are the new eastons that they have not made public yet. The WS kids are previewing them for Easton to the public and will be out next month. They are great bats and are only changing the colors in reverse of last years bats. No other changes are being made to them in terms of how they are built or what they are built from. Go to better baseball in Marietta and demo a few and see what your kid likes to swing. Much better than just buying one on everyone's opinions of them both performance-ise and size-wise:) |

Posted - 08/21/2012 : 19:35:24 He does not get the bat to his back. He tends to finish a little high and stops it prior When he barrels it 200' is not a problem and has hit line drives out in BP. 5-10 is not a problem in BP. Unfortunately game pitching is a different story. |

Posted - 08/21/2012 : 12:56:17 At 11, I would say the ability to hit 5-10 pitches over a 200' fence. You will know high bat speed when you see it. Does his bat make a thud as it hits his back on his follow-through? |

Posted - 08/21/2012 : 11:49:47 For Big Barrel, most kids that size would be fine with the Prodigy, or the Rival or any of those metal bats, because they are all fairly similar - they tend to dent easy on the faster swinging power hitters types then they do with the smaller contact hitters, but the warranty is outstanding, so I never worried (the Easton is 400day 2 returns, perfect for a new bat for spring, fall and the next spring if you can sweet talk them into sending you a bigger size like I've done in the past) - for the price you can't really beat them in terms of -10 bats.
My son is/was similar in size/style to yours (4'10,70lbs at 11u, 5'2 85lbs now at 12u) and he never hit a bat better than his Rivals (we had the blue and the orange before it) or his Lithium, and we've gone through some bats over the years, including several composites... Something about the sound of the ball coming off those bat seems to instill confidence.
The kids with a faster bat speed get the benefit of a composite bat. |

Posted - 08/21/2012 : 09:52:37 What is considered as High Velocity? I am having a hard time finding the right size bat. Swing speed is one of the most important things but what swing speed is considered fast? We have used swing radars in the past but not knowing what is average or fast does not help me in the decision. He is 11, a big strong kid and has been swinging a -10. We are looking to move to a -8 but he swings a -5 just as fast and a little more smooth than an 8??? Anyone have info on swing speeds from your experiences? |

Posted - 08/21/2012 : 08:24:21 Ah the good ole bat debate.
1. Worth Lithium Prodigy is the best bat for kids who do not swing like men. They work best with the kids with slower bat speeds 2. If you kid swings with high bat velocity (I doubt it), then I would get any of the composits that people reccomend. The Power kids will dent the prodigy pretty quickly. |

Posted - 08/20/2012 : 08:52:56 At that size and weight, chances are this hitter won't be able to generate enough bat speed or power to make a big barrel composite bat perform....Consequently, if you want a composite bat, get a small barrel.
You'll see plenty of smaller players getting good pop of the Easton S1 and Demarini 2 1/4 CF5 in the LLWS.
If you just have to have a big barrel, The Worth Lithium Prodigy still swings faster than anything else. If you want a little bit more durable option, maybe the Easton S3 or Rawlings 5150. Truth is, all three of them tend to dent rather quickly so be prepared to exercise your bat warranty.

Posted - 08/20/2012 : 02:24:09 If you are interested in the Easton Rival mentioned above, my Mom is about to put my brother's on ebay. It has literally been used one time. It is a 31/21. She bought it for him because I did so well with the Rival but my brother used it once and didn't like it - wanted to go back to the Worth Lithium. If you are interested, just leave your email address and I will get her to email you. She also has the limited edition Combat "Bubba" from CombatsOnline (http://shop.combatsonline.com/product.sc;jsessionid=73C2EDBF35F8454799A126DAC5E37CF3.qscstrfrnt06?productId=291)she is selling. She said both are going on ebay this week and both are USSSA stamped. |

Posted - 08/19/2012 : 20:17:01 The hottest bat is the XLSS4 Stealth XL....the dreaded "red bat".....my nephew used it for awhile but it's not that much better than the big barrel bats. With his weight I would probably have him swing the -10 Easton Rival. It's a good bat and pretty hot. |

Posted - 08/19/2012 : 19:33:18 Assuming he plays travel ball and big barrell bats are allowed DeMarini CF5 -10 Easton S1 -10 (S3 if he does not want composite, not a big fan of the S2) Combat B3 (drop 12) |

Posted - 08/19/2012 : 18:57:29 The Worth Lithium is a really hot bat for that age. Seems to do well for power hitters and contact hitters alike. It is aluminum. My 10 year old brother will be 11 in November and has used the Worth Lithium (in different sizes) since he was 7. He is a power hitter and has hit several over with this bat. BUT his best friend is a contact/med power hitter, about the same size as your son, and has hit some bombs with it as well. At travel tournaments, MANY players using the Lithium. Just my $.02. I have personally always been an Easton fan but not liking the new X and S series like the previous Speed/Rival family. Haven't been overly impressed by watching hitters use it either. Unless they are using a rolled composite of course... |
