Got a rising 14u player who will be a freshman next month. He wants to play high school football this fall and then high school baseball. This means that any team he makes during the upcoming tryouts for travel teams means he won't be able to play or practice much at all until next April or May. My question is would it be fair/reasonable to ask for a prorated fee? Most team fees are going to be for tournaments, practices, speed and agility/indoor workouts in the winter, etc. He won't be able to do any of that.

Wait until after Christmas to try out. Then you can usually get a prorated fee. If you want to be assured of the preferred team/place, you will pay the full fare. Many, many teams have players that play football, won't be the rarity.

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm thinking the best thing to do is just hook up with some team after high school season. Every team usually has injuries or disgruntled parents who leave by then. Would save money. Of course you may not end up with the perfect team. Something to think about.

Expect to pay full fare. Normal problem for 14u. You could inquire, but don't be surprised it you're told no.

I had one son that his 14u team had a fixed cost for spring but, because of variable availability of fall players due to football, basically kept track of who played in which tournaments and divided those tournament costs equally between families that played (regardless of how many games were played, one or all). This helped out the football folks who chose to do no fall baseball and those who wanted to play both but couldn't make all tourneys.

As for all the other spring fees (including winter workouts, indoor facility rentals, etc.), we paid the full share even though he could only make an occasional practice before HS ball started and then nothing during the HS season.
